As soon as I bought a country house, my daughter called and said, “Mom, get ready.
Marina stared at the locked gate in disbelief.
A neatly printed sign hung from it:
“WELCOME TO LAKEVIEW HOLIDAY COTTAGE.”
“Private Rental – Reserved This Week for the Wilson Family.”
She frowned.
“What is this?”
Just then, I stepped onto the porch with a smile.
“Hello, everyone.”
“Mom,” Marina said impatiently, “why is the gate locked?”
“Because the property is occupied.”
“What do you mean?”
“I rented the house out for the entire week.”
Her mouth fell open.
“You WHAT?”
“I rented it to a lovely family from Chicago.”
“They booked months ago.”
The Wilson family waved cheerfully from the backyard, where the children were already splashing in the pool.
A man walked over carrying a rental agreement.
“We hope we’re not too early,” he said.
“Everything’s perfect.”
Marina turned bright red.
“But… where are WE supposed to stay?”
I shrugged.
“I assumed you’d booked a hotel.”
Her mother-in-law stepped forward.
“This is your daughter’s family!”
“And this is my house,” I replied calmly.
“You never asked whether I wanted guests.”
“You informed me.”
“Those are two very different things.”
Bogdan tried to laugh it off.
“We were just joking.”
“Were you?”
“You told everyone I’d cook for a week.”
“You assigned bedrooms.”
“You made plans with my home.”
“Without asking me once.”
Silence.
Finally Marina whispered,
“You embarrassed us.”
I smiled gently.
“No.”
“You embarrassed yourselves.”
“I simply refused to let you treat my home like your free vacation resort.”
The Wilson children ran past laughing as Marina’s relatives awkwardly loaded their luggage back into the cars.
Her mother-in-law muttered something under her breath.
Bogdan avoided looking at me.
Before they drove away, Marina rolled down her window.
“Mom… you could’ve at least warned me.”
“I did.”
“When?”
“When I stayed silent on the phone.”
“You mistook my silence for agreement.”
“It wasn’t.”
After they left, I carried the cooler bags back into the kitchen.
That evening I shared the homemade dinner with my paying guests on the terrace.
For the first time in years, I enjoyed my own home without feeling responsible for everyone else’s comfort.
And from that day forward, whenever Marina wanted to visit, she asked a simple question she had never asked before:
“Mom… would it be okay if we came over?”
