MY FATHER BANNED MY SON FROM CHRISTMAS EVE. He swore it would be an adults-only dinner.

Silence spread across the dining room.

Even the children stopped playing.

My father stared at me.

“What did you just do?”

“I canceled tomorrow’s transfer.”

My mother’s face drained of color.

“You can’t do that.”

“I already did.”

“Your father’s medication—”

“He can sell the whiskey.”

My father slammed his hand against the table.

“You still have responsibilities to this family!”

“So does my son.”

“He isn’t the same.”

The words echoed through the room.

I looked directly at him.

“Why isn’t he the same?”

Before he could answer…

My sister suddenly spoke.

“Dad…”

“Stop.”

He turned toward her.

“You stay out of this.”

“No.”

“This has gone too far.”

For the first time all evening…

I noticed genuine fear in her eyes.

Then my father snapped.

“Remember what we agreed.”

Every muscle in my body tightened.

“What agreement?”

Nobody answered.

I slowly looked around the room.

Every adult avoided my eyes.

Except my sister.

She began crying.

“I’m sorry…”

“I never wanted this.”

My father shouted.

“Casilda!”

But it was too late.

She looked at me.

“The truth is…”

“Dad didn’t want Mateo here.”

“I know.”

“No…”

“You don’t understand.”

“He didn’t want him because…”

“…he can’t look at him.”

The room became perfectly silent.

My father’s hands began trembling.

My sister continued.

“Eight months ago…”

“The day Daniel died…”

“He wasn’t killed by bad luck.”

I stopped breathing.

“What are you talking about?”

She looked toward our father.

“He knows.”

“He always knew.”

My mother burst into tears.

“Casilda, please…”

“Don’t.”

But she couldn’t stop anymore.

“Dad invested money with one of Daniel’s construction partners.”

“They ignored safety inspections to save money.”

“The building collapsed.”

“The investigation was quietly buried.”

“Dad paid people…”

“So his name never appeared.”

The world around me disappeared.

I stared at my father.

“No…”

He lowered his eyes.

For the first time in my life…

He couldn’t look at me.

Daniel hadn’t simply died in an accident.

Greed had killed him.

And my father had helped cover it up.

“Every time he sees Mateo…”

My sister whispered.

“He sees Daniel.”

“And he can’t bear it.”

My father finally spoke.

“I was trying to protect the family.”

I laughed.

A cold…

Empty laugh.

“You destroyed my family.”

I reached into my purse.

Pulled out the envelope Mateo had given me.

The drawing.

A little house.

A Christmas tree.

Our entire family.

Daniel smiling from a cloud above them.

And Grandpa…

Holding Mateo’s hand.

I placed it in front of my father.

“He made this for you.”

“He still believed you loved him.”

My father looked at the drawing.

His hands shook violently.

A tear landed on the paper.

But it was too late.

I picked up my coat.

“No more money.”

“No more excuses.”

“No more pretending.”

My mother tried to stop me.

“Mariana…”

“We’re still your family.”

I looked back one final time.

“Family doesn’t exclude a seven-year-old boy who already buried his father.”

“It certainly doesn’t protect the people responsible for taking him away.”

I walked out into the cold Christmas night.

Twenty minutes later…

I arrived at Daniel’s parents’ house.

Mateo ran to the door.

His eyes lit up.

“You came back!”

I hugged him tighter than ever before.

“Did Grandpa like my drawing?”

I kissed his forehead.

“No, sweetheart.”

“I brought it back.”

“Because someone else deserved to keep it.”

He looked confused.

“Who?”

I smiled through my tears.

“You.”

“Because you drew the only real family I have left.”
