“Mommy, look! That’s the lady who PLAYS IN YOUR BEDROOM when you go to work.”
The moment our eyes met, she looked just as confused as I felt.
“I’m sorry…” she said politely. “Do I know you?”
I could barely speak.
“My son says… you’ve been inside my house.”
Her eyebrows shot up.
“Your house?”
Leo immediately pointed at her again.
“You’re the bedroom lady!”
The woman blinked several times before kneeling down to Leo’s eye level.
“Sweetheart… are you sure it’s me?”
Leo nodded enthusiastically.
“You always wear funny clothes when you come.”
My stomach twisted.
I was seconds away from demanding answers when the woman suddenly smiled.
“Oh…”
She looked back at me.
“Does your husband happen to be Cameron?”
My heart nearly stopped.
“Yes.”
She let out a relieved laugh.
“I think I know exactly what’s happening.”
“I work for DreamSpace Interiors.”
She reached into her purse and handed me a business card.
Senior Interior Designer
“My company specializes in custom bedroom renovations.”
I frowned.
“What?”
She pulled out her phone.
“About six months ago, your husband hired us.”
She scrolled through several photos before handing me the phone.
There was my bedroom.
Workers carrying furniture.
Painters.
Electricians.
And her…
Standing beside a wall covered with color samples.
“I’ve only been inside your home three times.”
“I was measuring the room and supervising the installation.”
I stared at the photos.
Everything matched.
“But… why would my husband hide that from me?”
She smiled warmly.
“He made every member of our team sign confidentiality agreements.”
“He said it was the biggest surprise of your life.”
Before I could ask another question, my phone rang.
It was Cameron.
“Hey,” he said cheerfully.
“How’s grocery shopping going?”
I looked at the designer.
She quietly nodded.
I took a deep breath.
“Cameron…”
“I think we need to talk.”
There was a long silence.
Then he sighed.
“You met Sarah, didn’t you?”
“So… it’s true?”
“Yes.”
“But not what you think.”
He laughed nervously.
“I was planning to tell you next Friday.”
“Tell me what?”
“Our tenth anniversary surprise.”
When I arrived home later that evening, Cameron was already waiting in the driveway.
He looked terrified.
“I’m so sorry,” he said before I could speak.
“I thought keeping the secret would make the surprise even better.”
He took my hand and led me upstairs.
When he opened our bedroom door…
I couldn’t believe what I was seeing.
The room had been completely transformed.
The peeling wallpaper I had complained about for years was gone.
The old furniture had been replaced with handcrafted oak pieces.
A reading nook stood beside the window.
Soft lights glowed behind the headboard.
Above the bed hung a framed photograph from our honeymoon.
I covered my mouth.
“Cameron…”
He smiled.
“You’ve spent ten years making every house we’ve lived in feel like a home.”
“I wanted to give you one room that was completely yours.”
Tears rolled down my cheeks.
Then Leo proudly tugged on my sleeve.
“See, Mommy?”
“The bedroom lady was nice.”
Everyone laughed.
Including me.
Because for one terrifying hour, I had been absolutely convinced my marriage was over.
Instead…
I discovered that my husband had been secretly rebuilding the room where our happiest memories had begun.
