My husband texted me: “Happy anniversary, babe. I’m stuck at work.”
The moment she reached their table, the air shifted.
You could feel it.
Andrew’s smile faded first. Not completely—just enough to show confusion. Vanessa—because now I knew her name—turned slightly, annoyed at the interruption.
“Andrew Bennett?” the woman in the suit said, calm but firm.
He blinked. “Yes…?”
She placed the leather folder on the table with a soft but deliberate thud.
“I’m Laura Hayes, Internal Compliance. We need to speak. Now.”
The restaurant noise didn’t stop, but it faded in my ears, like someone turned the volume down on the world.
Vanessa pulled her hand away from his face.
“What is this?” she asked, trying to sound composed.
The man with the badge stepped forward. “Ma’am, please remain seated.”
Andrew looked between them, then laughed nervously. “There must be some mistake—”
“There isn’t,” Laura cut in. “We have evidence of financial misconduct, misuse of company funds, and falsified expense reports.”
That hit him.
You could see it land.
His shoulders dropped just slightly, but enough.
“I—I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he stammered.
Daniel beside me crossed his arms. “Here we go,” he muttered.
Laura opened the folder and pulled out several printed documents. “Over the past four months, over $48,000 in company funds were redirected through false client meetings and travel reimbursements.”
She paused.
“Most of those ‘meetings’ were logged at a downtown condo.”
Vanessa’s face drained of color.
Andrew swallowed hard. “This is insane—”
The man with the badge stepped closer. “Sir, we also have surveillance footage and financial records tying both of you to these transactions.”
Vanessa stood up abruptly. “I’m leaving.”
“You can’t,” the man replied. “You’re involved.”
That’s when everything really cracked.
“No, no, no—this is not happening,” Andrew said, louder now, panic rising. He looked around the restaurant like someone might save him. Like someone might wake him up.
Our eyes met.
For the first time that night, he saw me.
Really saw me.
And in that second… I felt nothing.
No anger. No sadness.
Just clarity.
I stepped forward.
His mouth opened. “Wait—”
“Don’t,” I said, calm. “Just don’t.”
The room seemed to shrink around us.
“You lied to me,” I continued, my voice steady. “You told me you were working late while you were stealing money… and cheating on me.”
He shook his head, desperate. “It’s not what you think—”
I almost laughed.
“Really? Because from where I’m standing, it’s exactly what it looks like.”
Vanessa let out a sharp breath. “Andrew, do something!”
But he couldn’t.
Because there was nothing left to do.
Laura closed the folder. “Mr. Bennett, you’ll need to come with us.”
The man with the badge gently took Andrew by the arm.
“This is insane,” he whispered, more to himself than anyone else.
As they led him away, he kept looking back at me.
Not with love.
Not even with regret.
Just fear.
And maybe… realization.
Daniel stepped beside me again.
“Well,” he said quietly, “that escalated.”
I exhaled slowly, my hands finally relaxing.
“Yeah,” I said. “It did.”
Vanessa was still standing there, frozen, like her world had just collapsed too.
Funny how that works.
Daniel glanced at her, then back at me. “You okay?”
I looked down at the gift bag still in my hand.
The watch inside suddenly felt meaningless.
I set it down on the empty table.
“I will be,” I said.
And for the first time that night… I actually meant it.
