HE “HAD HIS FUN” WITH A COLLEGE STUDENT, LEFT HER ALONE IN THE WOODS
The elderly woman didn’t ask any questions.
She carefully wrapped her wool shawl around Oksana’s shoulders.
“My name is Marta,” she said softly.
“You’re safe now.”
Those were the first words Oksana heard that made her believe she might survive the night.
Marta lived alone in a small cottage on the edge of the forest.
She helped Oksana inside, lit the fireplace, brought her warm tea, and called the local emergency services.
“I know you’re frightened,” Marta said.
“But you don’t have to face this alone.”
Within minutes, paramedics and police arrived.
Marta stayed beside Oksana the entire time.
She encouraged her to accept medical care and reminded her that what had happened was not her fault.
At the hospital, Oksana gave a statement.
She expected disbelief.
Instead, the detective listened patiently.
“We’re going to investigate this thoroughly,” he said.
Roman was confident no one would believe her.
He had carefully built the image of a successful young businessman.
But investigators soon uncovered security footage from a gas station showing them together earlier that evening.
His phone placed him near the forest for hours.
More importantly, forensic evidence and Oksana’s prompt medical examination supported her account.
As detectives continued digging, they discovered something else.
Another woman had reported a frightening encounter with Roman two years earlier but had been too afraid to pursue the case.
When she learned someone else had come forward, she agreed to testify.
Then another woman contacted investigators.
And then another.
The pattern became impossible to ignore.
Months later, the courtroom was silent as the judge read the verdict.
Roman was found guilty based on the evidence presented and sentenced according to the law.
When the hearing ended, Oksana stepped outside into the sunlight.
She felt exhausted.
But for the first time in many months…
She felt free.
She returned to Marta’s cottage one last time.
The old woman was sitting on the porch, tending flowers.
“You were right,” Oksana said.
“About what?”
“That surviving wasn’t the end.”
“It was the beginning.”
Marta smiled.
“I didn’t change your destiny.”
“You did.”
“I only reminded you that even after the darkest night…”
“…there is always a path back toward the light.”
Years later, Oksana completed her studies and volunteered with an organization that supported survivors of violence.
Whenever someone whispered, “No one will believe me,” she would gently take their hand and say,
“I once heard those exact words.”
“They were wrong.”
“And you don’t have to walk through this alone.”
