Then he had documented portions of those same costs as money he<\/em> had advanced for Eleanor and reimbursed himself.<\/p>\n

I felt sick.<\/p>\n

The flash drive contained scanned records Eleanor had quietly collected with Harrison’s help.<\/p>\n

There were also copies of messages.<\/p>\n

One from Derek to a woman saved as M<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Once Mom is gone, things get easier. Sarah won’t question anything. She never does.<\/strong><\/p>\n

My hands went cold.<\/p>\n

Another:<\/p>\n

I’ll finally have access to what Dad left behind without Mom watching every dollar.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I stopped.<\/p>\n

Harrison leaned back.<\/p>\n

Eleanor’s late husband had built a successful regional construction business. He hadn’t left some hidden hundred-million-dollar empire, but the family was comfortable. After his death, most of the assets passed to Eleanor, with additional arrangements for the children.<\/p>\n

Derek had apparently spent years assuming that whatever remained would eventually be divided conventionally between him and Chloe.<\/p>\n

Years earlier, while her capacity was not in question and after receiving independent legal advice.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe didn’t leave everything to you,\u201d Harrison said carefully.<\/p>\n

\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n

He seemed surprised.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don’t want everything.\u201d<\/p>\n

Eleanor had provided specific gifts for both children and trusts for her grandchildren. Chloe would receive assets under the plan. Derek wasn’t simply erased.<\/p>\n

But a significant portion of what remained was directed elsewhere: charitable gifts, a fund supporting home care for elderly people who couldn’t afford it, and a trust whose income would help compensate me for housing and retirement after two decades in which caregiving had severely limited my own earnings.<\/p>\n

I stared at Harrison.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe did that for me?\u201d<\/p>\n

What the hell is this?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Where are you?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Sarah, answer me.<\/strong><\/p>\n

You’re seriously throwing away twenty years because I missed one funeral?<\/strong><\/p>\n

That one almost made me laugh.<\/p>\n

Then:<\/p>\n

Mom died?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I stared at those two words for a long time.<\/p>\n

He genuinely hadn’t known.<\/p>\n

I answered only once.<\/p>\n

Your attorney can communicate with mine. Harrison Reed has something belonging to you from Eleanor.<\/strong><\/p>\n
