\u201cYou watched me walk in here smiling.\u201d<\/p>\n

Arnold’s face crumpled.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe made us promise.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou don’t get to promise someone you’ll help him lie to his wife about cancer.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDoes he know I’m here?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTake me to him.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ben was sitting in a treatment chair when I entered.<\/p>\n

For the first time, I saw everything I’d somehow failed to see at home.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe treatment didn’t work as well as we’d hoped.\u201d<\/p>\n

That explained the crying I’d seen months earlier.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat are they saying now?\u201d<\/p>\n

He couldn’t look at me.<\/p>\n

\u201cBen.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt has spread.\u201d<\/p>\n

I sat down.<\/p>\n

I wanted him to.<\/p>\n

That was the terrible thing about loving someone who had hurt you while he was dying. Anger and terror occupied the same space until I couldn’t tell where one ended and the other began.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo. You were protecting yourself from watching us be afraid.\u201d<\/p>\n

His eyes snapped toward mine.<\/p>\n

He started crying.<\/p>\n

\u201cI spend my life telling families terrible things,\u201d he said. \u201cI’ve watched wives collapse in hallways. I’ve watched children understand that their father isn’t coming home. And when they told me, all I could see was you and Emma looking at me that way.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSo you disappeared while you were still alive.\u201d<\/p>\n

He had continued working during parts of his treatment, but many of the nights he’d claimed to be operating had actually been infusions, scans, appointments, or simply hours spent sitting in his office afterward because he couldn’t make himself come home and lie to my face.<\/p>\n

At the bottom was the original note, stained with a little apple-pie filling.<\/p>\n

I nearly threw it away.<\/p>\n
