One of those parcels, however, had recently become very interesting.<\/p>\n
Cascadia Health Partners, the physician group Julian was working with, wanted to develop a private medical tower there. Julian had spent nearly two years talking about the project. He wanted surgical suites, specialist offices, an outpatient imaging center, and his name attached to one of the flagship practices.<\/p>\n
He knew my family had once owned property in the area.<\/p>\n
He did not know the specific parcel under negotiation was still controlled through my trust.<\/p>\n
That wasn’t because I’d deliberately hidden it. Julian simply had never asked enough questions to remember.<\/p>\n
Rebecca answered on the third ring.<\/p>\n
\u201cClaire?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI need you to stop the medical-property negotiations.\u201d<\/p>\n
She was silent for a moment.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cBecause I just watched Julian kiss another woman at Sea-Tac while his entire family prepared to fly to Hawaii with them.\u201d<\/p>\n
Another pause.<\/p>\n
Then Rebecca’s voice became entirely professional.<\/p>\n
\u201cDo you want to terminate negotiations because you’re angry at your husband, or because you no longer want the trust entering this transaction?\u201d<\/p>\n
The question irritated me for half a second.<\/p>\n
Then I understood why she’d asked it.<\/p>\n
This wasn’t a movie.<\/p>\n
I couldn’t use a trust asset as a weapon simply because my marriage had exploded in an airport.<\/p>\n
\u201cI don’t want to sign anything tonight,\u201d I said. \u201cNothing moves forward until I review the deal independently.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThat I can do.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cPlease do.\u201d<\/p>\n
Rebecca reminded me that stopping unsigned negotiations was very different from tearing up a binding contract. Existing obligations would have to be honored, and she would review exactly what had already been executed.<\/p>\n
\u201cUnderstood.\u201d<\/p>\n
After that, I made a second call.<\/p>\n
To my parents.<\/p>\n
\u201cKeep Maya and Leo tonight,\u201d I said. \u201cAnd tomorrow too.\u201d<\/p>\n
My mother heard something in my voice.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI’ll tell you when I’m there.\u201d<\/p>\n
I didn’t confront Julian at the gate.<\/p>\n
I didn’t send him the photograph I had taken from above.<\/p>\n
And I didn’t walk downstairs to humiliate him in front of his mother.<\/p>\n
Instead, I went home.<\/p>\n
For the next several hours, I copied financial records, changed passwords to accounts that were mine alone, reviewed joint accounts without draining them, and documented what I could.<\/p>\n
Then I slept for approximately forty minutes.<\/p>\n
At 6:13 the next morning, Julian texted me from Honolulu.<\/p>\n
Surgery was brutal. Just got home and crashed. Sorry I missed your calls.
