No flirting. No cruel prank. No attempt to embarrass her body. He simply opened the family group chat that included my parents, our older brother, Kayla, and me, and began typing.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou’re a guest here because Rachel loves you. You’re not paying rent. You’re using her car. She’s buying groceries while you look for work. She asked you for one incredibly simple thing, and instead of respecting it, you called her insecure.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI was joking.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cNo, you weren’t.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIt was just a towel.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThen wearing a robe shouldn’t have been such a sacrifice.\u201d<\/p>\n
Silence filled the kitchen.<\/p>\n
Kayla’s face was still bright red, but now it looked less like embarrassment and more like anger.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou two have obviously been talking about me behind my back.\u201d<\/p>\n
I finally spoke.<\/p>\n
\u201cNo, Kayla. We’ve been talking about something happening directly in front of us.\u201d<\/p>\n
She looked at me as though I’d betrayed her.<\/p>\n

Kayla sat down and began crying.<\/p>\n

When her car broke down, I drove two hours.
