Once investigators began examining the records, financial questions followed. Victor had gradually accumulated extraordinary control over Stephen’s affairs while presenting him to banks, employees, and business partners as a man incapable of making meaningful decisions. Large management fees had been paid to companies connected to Victor, and several proposed asset transfers were waiting for approval.<\/p>\n
There was no dramatic arrest in Stephen’s bedroom that afternoon. The investigation took months, accountants examined records, doctors were interviewed, and lawyers argued over which decisions Stephen had genuinely authorized while ill. Some transactions turned out to be legitimate; others became the subject of civil and criminal scrutiny.<\/p>\n
But the most important change happened almost immediately: Victor no longer controlled Stephen’s medication or access to the outside world.<\/p>\n
With independent doctors and physical therapists, Stephen slowly improved. He never returned to the man he had been before the stroke. He walked with assistance, his speech remained rough, and some days his left side barely cooperated, but six months after Vera first felt his fingers close around her wrist, he crossed his bedroom using a walker.<\/p>\n
Vera cried when she saw it.<\/p>\n
