The mother covered her mouth to keep herself from screaming.<\/p>\n

Beneath the bandages, the young woman\u2019s face was covered with severe scars.<\/p>\n

One side of her face had been badly burned. The skin around her cheek and jaw was uneven and discolored, and a long scar stretched from her temple almost to her chin.<\/p>\n

But that wasn\u2019t what terrified the elderly couple most.<\/p>\n

It was what their son did next.<\/p>\n

He knelt beside his wife, took a small container from the table, and began gently applying ointment to the damaged skin.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut she went back for you,\u201d his father said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know. I’ve told her that a thousand times.\u201d<\/p>\n

At that moment, they heard a sound behind them.<\/p>\n

Anna was standing in the doorway.<\/p>\n

Her face was once again covered with bandages.<\/p>\n

She had heard everything.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m sorry,\u201d she whispered. \u201cI never wanted to bring trouble into your home.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then she turned to leave.<\/p>\n

But Alex\u2019s mother rushed toward her.<\/p>\n

For the first time since Anna had arrived, the elderly woman wrapped her arms around her daughter-in-law.<\/p>\n

Anna froze.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou brought my son home alive,\u201d the mother whispered through her tears. \u201cHow could I ever see you as trouble?\u201d<\/p>\n

Anna began sobbing.<\/p>\n
