I read the sentence again.<\/p>\n

Then again.<\/p>\n

My hands started shaking.<\/p>\n

Inside the envelope were four handwritten pages.<\/p>\n

The date at the top was almost eighteen months old.<\/p>\n

David had written the letter shortly after his first major hospitalization, back when he could still walk around the house with a cane and make his own breakfast.<\/p>\n

Back when we’d both pretended this might be temporary.<\/p>\n

His handwriting became shakier with each page.<\/p>\n

And if one day I live somewhere you don’t, please understand that you are not leaving me. You are simply allowing other hands to help carry what has become too heavy for yours alone.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

For almost two years, I thought taking care of David meant doing everything myself.<\/p>\n

I was wrong.<\/p>\n

I had confused love with endurance.<\/p>\n

I thought keeping my promise meant keeping him inside our house at any cost.<\/p>\n

But David understood something before I did.<\/p>\n

The promise wasn’t about a building.<\/p>\n

It wasn’t about who changed his sheets or handed him his medication.<\/p>\n

It was about not abandoning each other.<\/p>\n

And strangely enough, after David moved into the place I’d been terrified to send him, I finally became his wife again.<\/p>\n

The envelope is still in my purse.<\/p>\n

But his old watch\u2014the one I was looking for when I found it\u2014is back where it belongs.<\/p>\n

On David’s wrist.<\/p>\n

Every Thursday, when our movie ends, he taps its scratched glass and smiles at me.<\/p>\n
