Some had legitimate explanations.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy husband gave me permission to manage those accounts!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFor some expenses, yes.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThen this is my money!\u201d<\/p>\n

Margaret closed the folder.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat’s precisely why the accounting exists\u2014to determine what belonged to whom and what was properly authorized.\u201d<\/p>\n

There was no dramatic declaration that Vanessa was a criminal.<\/p>\n

No police officers burst through the door.<\/p>\n

No one handcuffed her.<\/p>\n

Reality was slower.<\/p>\n

And far less satisfying in the moment.<\/p>\n

Then Margaret pointed toward the recorder.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere’s one more thing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dad had recorded a message.<\/p>\n

Not a secret confession.<\/p>\n

Not an accusation.<\/p>\n

A goodbye.<\/p>\n

Margaret pressed play.<\/p>\n

For the first time since his death, I heard my father’s voice.<\/p>\n

Dad had continued wearing it on his right hand after marrying Vanessa, with Vanessa’s wedding band on his left.<\/p>\n

I’d never understood why.<\/p>\n

Now I did.<\/p>\n

A year later, Michael and I sold our childhood home.<\/p>\n

That surprised everyone.<\/p>\n

After fighting so hard to preserve Dad’s wishes, why sell it?<\/p>\n

Because Dad hadn’t left us a museum.<\/p>\n

He’d left us a choice.<\/p>\n

For a long time, I thought he meant the house.<\/p>\n

He didn’t.<\/p>\n
