The woman standing in our kitchen was named Rosa Martinez.<\/p>\n
I had met her twice before.<\/p>\n
She was Angela’s housekeeper.<\/p>\n
For the past six years, Rosa had cleaned Angela’s three-bedroom home every Monday and Thursday.<\/p>\n

Rosa’s mouth tightened.<\/p>\n

I almost laughed.<\/p>\n
That lasagna.<\/p>\n
Angela had spent twenty minutes explaining to me how much effort \u201creal cooking\u201d required while I washed every dish after dinner.<\/p>\n
Nathan looked back at his mother.<\/p>\n

Nathan stared at her.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou humiliated my wife in front of our children.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI am your mother!\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd Claire is my wife.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYou chose some woman over your own mother?\u201d<\/p>\n
Nathan’s calm disappeared for just a second.<\/p>\n
\u201cShe’s not \u2018some woman.\u2019 She’s the woman I’ve been married to for twelve years. She’s the mother of your grandchildren.\u201d<\/p>\n
Angela grabbed her purse.<\/p>\n
\u201cI cannot believe how disrespectful you’ve become.\u201d<\/p>\n
Nathan walked to the refrigerator.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat are you doing?\u201d<\/p>\n
He opened it and pulled out a container.<\/p>\n
Leftover casserole.<\/p>\n
\u201cDid you make this?\u201d<\/p>\n
I knew exactly where he was going.<\/p>\n
Angela did too.<\/p>\n
\u201cNathan, stop this nonsense.\u201d<\/p>\n
He checked the label.<\/p>\n
\u201cClaire made it Sunday.\u201d<\/p>\n
Then he carried it toward the trash.<\/p>\n

Then at the trash can containing ninety dollars of untouched dinner.<\/p>\n
\u201cInteresting.\u201d<\/p>\n
Angela’s mouth opened.<\/p>\n
Nathan put the casserole back in the refrigerator.<\/p>\n
\u201cI wouldn’t throw away perfectly good food either.\u201d<\/p>\n
Then he pointed toward the garbage.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat’s something you do.\u201d<\/p>\n
For the first time, Angela had nothing to say.<\/p>\n
Nathan walked to the front door and opened it.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt’s time for you to go.\u201d<\/p>\n
She stared at him.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou’re throwing your mother out?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cTonight? Yes.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cBecause of takeout?\u201d<\/p>\n

His voice softened.<\/p>\n
\u201cBecause my wife is sick, my kids are hungry, and somehow you’ve managed to make tonight about whether everyone respects you enough.\u201d<\/p>\n
Angela’s eyes filled with tears.<\/p>\n
I almost felt guilty.<\/p>\n
Almost.<\/p>\n
Then she turned toward me.<\/p>\n
\u201cI hope you’re happy.\u201d<\/p>\n
Before I could answer, Nathan did.<\/p>\n
\u201cShe has a fever of 102. I don’t think she’s particularly happy.\u201d<\/p>\n
Despite everything, I laughed.<\/p>\n
Angela stormed out.<\/p>\n
Nathan closed the door.<\/p>\n

Angela didn’t speak to us for twelve days.<\/p>\n

Nathan told him the entire story.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause she likes being praised.\u201d<\/p>\n
