Patricia pushed past her son.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s impossible. This is the Monroe house.\u201d<\/p>\n

My attorney, Rachel Bennett, opened the folder in her hands.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, Mrs. Monroe. It isn’t.\u201d<\/p>\n

Patricia laughed.<\/p>\n

It was a strange, nervous sound.<\/p>\n

Patricia had smiled.<\/p>\n

She thought the testimony would help Grant prove the house belonged to him.<\/p>\n

Instead, when the judge ruled that it belonged solely to me, Patricia had eliminated the very argument she might otherwise have tried to make about her own right to remain.<\/p>\n

The removal of their belongings that afternoon was carried out pursuant to the court’s possession order and under the supervision arranged by my attorney.<\/p>\n

Patricia finally understood.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou planned this.\u201d<\/p>\n

I looked at her.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo. You testified to it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Grant rubbed his forehead.<\/p>\n

During the divorce, we’d discovered that Grant had taken out a $480,000 line of credit.<\/p>\n

He had listed the house as collateral.<\/p>\n

My house.<\/p>\n

He had submitted documents carrying what appeared to be my signature.<\/p>\n

Except I had never signed them.<\/p>\n

At first, Grant claimed I’d forgotten.<\/p>\n
