Inside were architectural drawings.<\/p>\n

They wanted to build their dream home.<\/p>\n

Four bedrooms, a large kitchen, a home office, a swimming pool, and enough space for their two children to each have their own room.<\/p>\n

There was only one problem.<\/p>\n

They couldn\u2019t afford the down payment.<\/p>\n

\u201cI hate asking you,\u201d Rebecca had said.<\/p>\n

She hadn\u2019t looked embarrassed.<\/p>\n

I told her I would give her the $200,000 after their anniversary.<\/p>\n

She hugged me.<\/p>\n

For months afterward, she sent me photographs of countertops, hardwood floors, bathroom tiles, and kitchen islands.<\/p>\n

Not once did she ask whether giving away that much money frightened me.<\/p>\n

Rebecca crossed her arms.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo you’re punishing me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m choosing myself.\u201d<\/p>\n

She stared at me.<\/p>\n

Then came the sentence that proved I had made the right decision.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat could you possibly need $200,000 for at your age?\u201d<\/p>\n

Several people visibly winced.<\/p>\n

Her eyes filled with tears.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s unfair.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, sweetheart. What’s unfair is expecting someone to disappear so you can inherit her life while she’s still living it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nobody spoke.<\/p>\n

Then my grandson, fourteen-year-old Caleb, broke the silence.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think Grandma looks awesome.\u201d<\/p>\n

A few people laughed.<\/p>\n

Even I did.<\/p>\n

Rebecca didn’t.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat are you going to do with the money?\u201d<\/p>\n

That was the part I had been waiting for.<\/p>\n

\u201cI bought something yesterday.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mark frowned.<\/p>\n

For almost forty years, I had talked about wanting a little place near the coast.<\/p>\n

Then her wedding.<\/p>\n

Then helping with the grandchildren.<\/p>\n

\u201cI’ll still be their grandmother.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her voice cracked.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou’re just leaving?\u201d<\/p>\n

I shook my head.<\/p>\n

\u201cRebecca, living somewhere else for part of the year isn’t abandoning you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then I smiled gently.<\/p>\n

\u201cI’m seventy-two, remember? Apparently I don’t have unlimited time.\u201d<\/p>\n

That finally broke through her anger.<\/p>\n

Her face crumpled.<\/p>\n

She sat down.<\/p>\n

For the first time that evening, she wasn’t thinking about the money.<\/p>\n

She was thinking about me.<\/p>\n

Later, after the guests left, Rebecca found me outside the restaurant waiting for my car.<\/p>\n

She stood beside me without speaking.<\/p>\n

I nodded.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n

She looked down at my dress.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou really do look beautiful.\u201d<\/p>\n

I laughed.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou don’t have to like the dress.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo. I do.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then she gave me a small smile.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just wasn’t ready for everyone else to notice my mother still had more confidence than I did.\u201d<\/p>\n

That sounded much more like the daughter I remembered.<\/p>\n

She and Mark eventually bought a smaller house.<\/p>\n

They had to wait another year, save more money, and give up the swimming pool.<\/p>\n

I stared at her.<\/p>\n

Then we both burst out laughing.<\/p>\n

That evening, we went to dinner wearing dresses that made people look twice.<\/p>\n

And for once, neither of us cared.<\/p>\n

Because getting older had taken many things from me.<\/p>\n
