The old freezer stood against the basement wall beneath a dusty shelf of Christmas decorations.<\/p>\n

I hadn’t used it in years.<\/p>\n

It had been there when I bought the house, an enormous white chest freezer with rust creeping around the hinges. I had unplugged it shortly after moving in and mostly forgotten about it.<\/p>\n

Until that moment.<\/p>\n

You assumed I was poor because I lived simply.<\/em><\/p>\n

My eyes began filling with tears.<\/p>\n

I covered my mouth.<\/p>\n

Then I reached for the final envelope.<\/p>\n

It contained legal documents.<\/p>\n

Lawrence had left me money.<\/p>\n

Not all of it.<\/p>\n

A substantial portion was going to charities his wife had supported.<\/p>\n

But he had left $150,000 to me.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I immediately grabbed my phone and called the attorney.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere has to be a mistake.\u201d<\/p>\n

The attorney almost sounded amused.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe left instructions that you should read the final page before making any decisions.\u201d<\/p>\n

I found it.<\/p>\n

Lawrence’s handwriting had become shakier.<\/p>\n

Rebecca,<\/em><\/p>\n

Don’t turn this into a debt.<\/em><\/p>\n

That’s exactly what you never did to me.<\/em><\/p>\n

You gave me nine years in which somebody noticed when my curtains didn’t open in the morning.<\/em><\/p>\n

That sentence broke me.<\/p>\n

I sat on the basement floor and cried.<\/p>\n

But there was still the small key.<\/p>\n

When I asked the attorney about it, he became quiet.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat,\u201d he said, \u201cis why Lawrence wanted you to find the box before the will was fully settled.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lawrence’s son.<\/p>\n

Some had been returned unopened.<\/p>\n

Others had never been mailed.<\/p>\n

At the bottom was a note addressed to me.<\/p>\n

I failed my son.<\/em><\/p>\n

When he stepped out of his car in front of Lawrence’s house, I immediately saw his father in him.<\/p>\n

And every winter, when the first snow falls, I still think about that old freezer in my basement.<\/p>\n

Because Lawrence hadn’t hidden a fortune there.<\/p>\n
