Flash cards.<\/p>\n
Notebooks.<\/p>\n
Printed worksheets.<\/p>\n
And beside them sat an old portable voice recorder.<\/p>\n
Dad was sitting across from her with reading glasses balanced on the end of his nose.<\/p>\n
Emily had a pencil in one hand.<\/p>\n
In the other, she was holding a sheet of paper.<\/p>\n
Across the top, in large letters, Dad had written:<\/p>\n

But reading takes considerably more effort for her.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cWhy didn’t her teacher tell me?\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cShe probably hasn’t understood the extent of it yet. Emily has become very good at hiding it.\u201d<\/p>\n I looked at my daughter.<\/p>\n \u201cWhy would you hide this from me?\u201d<\/p>\n Her answer broke my heart.<\/p>\n \u201cBecause you’re already sad.\u201d<\/p>\n I stopped breathing.<\/p>\n Emily wiped her face.<\/p>\n \u201cAfter Daddy died, you cried all the time when you thought I was asleep.
