For several seconds, I just stared at the screen.<\/p>\n

The address was in Cedar Falls, nearly forty miles away.<\/p>\n

I had never lived there.<\/p>\n

Neither had Richard.<\/p>\n

At least, not that I knew of.<\/p>\n

I told myself there had to be a simple explanation. Maybe Richard had bought the GPS used. Maybe one of our sons had changed the setting. Maybe \u201cHome\u201d belonged to someone he regularly helped.<\/p>\n

But the truck had been Richard\u2019s for six years, and he treated it like another child. Nobody borrowed it.<\/p>\n

I should have gone home.<\/p>\n

Instead, I pressed START<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The navigation system calculated the route.<\/p>\n

Forty-eight minutes.<\/p>\n

My first solo drive suddenly became something entirely different.<\/p>\n

I stayed in the right lane, both hands locked around the wheel. Every few miles, I almost turned around.<\/p>\n

Then the GPS announced:<\/p>\n

\u201cYou have arrived.\u201d<\/p>\n

I slowed down.<\/p>\n

The address belonged to a small blue house on a quiet suburban street.<\/p>\n

There were flowers along the porch and a bicycle leaning against the garage.<\/p>\n

Nothing about it looked sinister.<\/p>\n

Then I saw Richard\u2019s photograph in the front window.<\/p>\n

I slammed on the brakes.<\/p>\n

It was unmistakably him.<\/p>\n

The photograph showed Richard standing beside an elderly man I didn\u2019t recognize, both of them smiling beside a fishing boat.<\/p>\n

Her eyes widened.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo. God, no.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then she stepped aside.<\/p>\n

\u201cPlease come in. There\u2019s something you need to see.\u201d<\/p>\n

I hesitated before entering.<\/p>\n

The elderly man from the photograph was sitting in a recliner.<\/p>\n

When he saw me, he slowly stood.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou must be Margaret.\u201d<\/p>\n

Now two strangers knew my name.<\/p>\n

\u201cWho are you?\u201d<\/p>\n

The man looked toward the woman.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy name is Samuel.\u201d<\/p>\n

He paused.<\/p>\n

\u201cRichard was my brother.\u201d<\/p>\n

I actually laughed.<\/p>\n

It came out sharp and confused.<\/p>\n

\u201cRichard didn’t have a brother.\u201d<\/p>\n

Samuel\u2019s face tightened.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe did.\u201d<\/p>\n

The woman introduced herself as Samuel\u2019s daughter, Rebecca.<\/p>\n

Then Samuel told me the story Richard had apparently spent forty years refusing to tell.<\/p>\n

They had grown up together in rural Pennsylvania. Their father drank heavily and could become violent. Richard left home at eighteen after a terrible fight.<\/p>\n

Samuel stayed.<\/p>\n

Years later, after their parents died, Samuel tried repeatedly to rebuild the relationship.<\/p>\n

Richard refused.<\/p>\n

Not because he hated Samuel.<\/p>\n

Because he was ashamed.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe thought leaving made him a coward,\u201d Samuel explained.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut why hide you from me?\u201d<\/p>\n

Samuel looked down.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat part I never understood.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rebecca brought out a cardboard box.<\/p>\n

Inside were birthday cards, photographs, fishing licenses, and dozens of letters.<\/p>\n

Richard had been visiting them for years.<\/p>\n

Sometimes once a month.<\/p>\n

Sometimes more.<\/p>\n

I found photographs dated on weekends when he had told me he was helping friends or working overtime.<\/p>\n

The betrayal felt strange.<\/p>\n

There was no mistress.<\/p>\n

No second family.<\/p>\n

But there was still an entire part of my husband\u2019s life he had deliberately kept from me.<\/p>\n

Then Rebecca handed me an envelope.<\/p>\n

My name was written across the front.<\/p>\n

Margaret.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Richard\u2019s handwriting.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe left this here about six months ago,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

I opened it.<\/p>\n

The letter was only two pages.<\/p>\n

Richard admitted everything.<\/p>\n

He wrote that controlling my driving had never really been about my reflexes.<\/p>\n

He liked being needed.<\/p>\n

If I couldn\u2019t drive, he was the person who took me shopping, brought me to appointments, visited the children with me.<\/p>\n

He had convinced himself that dependence was closeness.<\/p>\n

Reading those words hurt worse than I expected.<\/p>\n

Near the end, he wrote:<\/p>\n

I know someday you may realize how much smaller I made your world because I was afraid you might discover you didn\u2019t need me.<\/em><\/p>\n

I lowered the letter.<\/p>\n

Samuel quietly asked, \u201cAre you okay?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI don’t know.\u201d<\/p>\n

And that was the truth.<\/p>\n

For forty years, I had loved Richard.<\/p>\n

That love didn’t disappear in one afternoon.<\/p>\n

Neither did my anger.<\/p>\n

Before leaving, Samuel walked me to the truck.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou drove here yourself?\u201d<\/p>\n

I nodded.<\/p>\n

\u201cFirst solo trip.\u201d<\/p>\n

He did too.<\/p>\n

It was inappropriate and painful and somehow exactly what I needed.<\/p>\n

I drove home before dark.<\/p>\n

A week later, I drove to the cemetery alone for the first time.<\/p>\n

I placed flowers beside Richard\u2019s headstone and sat on the grass.<\/p>\n

\u201cI found Samuel,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n

The cemetery was quiet.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I found your letter.\u201d<\/p>\n

I ran my fingers over his name.<\/p>\n

\u201cI loved you, Richard. But you were wrong about something.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then I stood and looked toward the parking lot.<\/p>\n

His old pickup was waiting for me.<\/p>\n
