Every transfer to Brooke.<\/p>\n

Every unauthorized charge.<\/p>\n

Every email discussing the plan to pressure me after the birth.<\/p>\n

By Thursday, the accountant had found more than $46,000 in questionable payments.<\/p>\n

Some were legitimate business expenses.<\/p>\n

On Friday afternoon, Caleb finally noticed the account restrictions.<\/p>\n

They came home two days early.<\/p>\n

I watched their SUV pull into the driveway from the upstairs window.<\/p>\n

Silence.<\/p>\n

Brooke went pale.<\/p>\n

Diane recovered first.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have no idea what you’re talking about.\u201d<\/p>\n

I took out my phone.<\/p>\n

\u201cWould you like me to read your daughter’s emails?\u201d<\/p>\n

Brooke immediately looked at Caleb.<\/p>\n

That was enough.<\/p>\n

Diane’s expression changed.<\/p>\n

\u201cThose were private conversations.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAbout my property.\u201d<\/p>\n

Caleb stepped closer.<\/p>\n

It was the first time I’d heard that word from him in days.<\/p>\n

I looked at the suitcases behind him.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can collect your personal belongings according to the arrangements in that letter. Marcus will handle everything else.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cEverything else?\u201d<\/p>\n

I nodded.<\/p>\n

His face drained of color.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat about it?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe account is frozen pending an audit.\u201d<\/p>\n

Brooke interrupted.<\/p>\n

I looked at her.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt isn’t his company.\u201d<\/p>\n

Caleb closed his eyes.<\/p>\n

\u201cI invested the startup capital, guaranteed the equipment loans, and retained controlling ownership.\u201d<\/p>\n

Diane looked genuinely confused.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut Caleb built it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I wanted him to succeed.\u201d<\/p>\n

I turned to Brooke.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat didn’t include paying you thousands of dollars for consulting work our accountant can’t verify.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her face went red.<\/p>\n

\u201cI did work.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cGreat. Then you’ll have no trouble providing invoices and records.\u201d<\/p>\n

Caleb suddenly looked exhausted.<\/p>\n

\u201cClaire, please. You’re eight months pregnant. We don’t need this stress.\u201d<\/p>\n

There it was again.<\/p>\n

My pregnancy.<\/p>\n

The thing they had counted on making me weaker was now being used to tell me I shouldn’t defend myself.<\/p>\n

\u201cI agree,\u201d I said. \u201cWhich is why you’re not coming inside.\u201d<\/p>\n

Diane started shouting.<\/p>\n

Caleb didn’t.<\/p>\n
