He calmly placed a folder beside his plate.<\/p>\n

Daniel turned toward Mom.<\/p>\n

Mom thought for a moment.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe texted me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lauren\u2019s confidence disappeared.<\/p>\n

Mom pulled out her phone.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll five thousand?\u201d<\/p>\n

Lauren didn\u2019t answer.<\/p>\n

I already suspected the answer.<\/p>\n

During those six months, I\u2019d seen her post pictures from a weekend in Las Vegas, show off a new handbag, and brag about expensive concert tickets.<\/p>\n

Eric apparently remembered those things too.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou told me your bonus paid for Vegas,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt mostly did.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lauren\u2019s face reddened.<\/p>\n

Mom reached across the table.<\/p>\n

\u201cEric, please. I don\u2019t want you two fighting.\u201d<\/p>\n

That was the moment that bothered me most.<\/p>\n

Mom was the person missing $5,000, yet she was comforting everyone else.<\/p>\n

Daniel must have noticed too.<\/p>\n

He closed the folder.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a simple alternative to turning this into a larger dispute. Put a repayment agreement in writing tonight. Pick an amount Lauren can realistically pay every month.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lauren laughed bitterly.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou seriously expect me to sign something?\u201d<\/p>\n

I looked at her.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou told me Mom doesn\u2019t need the money because she\u2019s retired.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI was angry.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou also said you needed it more than she did.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI shouldn\u2019t have said that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo. You shouldn\u2019t have believed it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mom looked down at her hands.<\/p>\n

Then, unexpectedly, she spoke.<\/p>\n

\u201cI need a refrigerator.\u201d<\/p>\n

Everyone became quiet.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy refrigerator broke,\u201d she continued. \u201cAnd I couldn\u2019t replace it because I gave Lauren my emergency savings.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lauren\u2019s expression finally softened.<\/p>\n

Mom looked directly at her.<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t save that money because I have nothing to spend it on. I saved it because your father-in-law is gone, I live on a fixed income, and when something breaks, there isn\u2019t another paycheck coming Friday.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lauren said nothing.<\/p>\n

That did more than anything I had planned.<\/p>\n

Eric eventually asked Daniel what a reasonable repayment arrangement would look like.<\/p>\n

They agreed on $500 immediately and $375 per month for twelve months.<\/p>\n

Lauren signed it.<\/p>\n

Not happily, but she signed.<\/p>\n

Eric transferred the first $500 to Mom himself that night.<\/p>\n

The next morning, I took Mom shopping and bought her a refrigerator. She protested until I told her she could repay me only after Lauren had repaid every cent she owed.<\/p>\n

She never did repay me for the refrigerator.<\/p>\n

I wouldn\u2019t let her.<\/p>\n

Lauren, however, made every payment.<\/p>\n
