I almost laughed.<\/p>\n

I had carried their child for nine months, delivered her less than an hour earlier, and somehow I was the one making things complicated.<\/p>\n

A nurse stepped inside after hearing our raised voices.<\/p>\n

For two years, Claire and Evan had built an imaginary child in their heads. Every appointment, every nursery purchase, every conversation had made that imaginary baby more specific.<\/p>\n

Then a real human being arrived.<\/p>\n

Real children don’t owe their parents perfection.<\/p>\n

Evan took longer.<\/p>\n

He came to the hospital that afternoon but remained near the door.<\/p>\n

Claire was feeding the baby.<\/p>\n

He hesitated.<\/p>\n
