Ernest didn’t open the door.<\/p>\n

Instead, he picked up his phone and called Theresa.<\/p>\n

Silence.<\/p>\n

His stomach dropped.<\/p>\n

\u201cTheresa. Tell me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe’re at Northwestern Memorial.\u201d<\/p>\n

He gripped the desk.<\/p>\n

Patricia saw them.<\/p>\n

\u201cThose documents are drafts.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSo you know which documents I’m talking about.\u201d<\/p>\n

Patricia realized her mistake immediately.<\/p>\n

Ernest had never seen such naked fear on her face.<\/p>\n

She stepped closer.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe should discuss this privately.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou’re humiliating me.\u201d<\/p>\n

The words almost made him laugh.<\/p>\n

She had frightened his daughter, terrified his grandson, and apparently spent months planning to gain control over his assets.<\/p>\n

Yet humiliation was what concerned her.<\/p>\n

\u201cI’ve already contacted my attorney,\u201d Ernest said. \u201cAny authorization or pending document involving you is being revoked or challenged immediately.\u201d<\/p>\n

Patricia’s voice dropped.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can’t do this to me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI can cancel my own wedding.\u201d<\/p>\n

She reached for his jacket.<\/p>\n

One of the security officers stepped between them.<\/p>\n

\u201cMa’am, please keep your distance.\u201d<\/p>\n

Guests had begun appearing at the far end of the hallway.<\/p>\n

Among them was Ernest’s business partner.<\/p>\n

Then Patricia made the mistake that ended any remaining doubt.<\/p>\n

She looked directly at Ernest and hissed, \u201cAfter everything I’ve put into this, you think I’m walking away with nothing?\u201d<\/p>\n

Ernest stared at her.<\/p>\n

There it was.<\/p>\n

Not heartbreak.<\/p>\n

Investment.<\/p>\n

Calculation.<\/p>\n

He walked into the ballroom alone fifteen minutes later.<\/p>\n

The music stopped.<\/p>\n

One hundred twenty people turned toward him.<\/p>\n

He didn’t describe the video. He didn’t publicly expose Lucy’s injuries or turn his daughter’s pain into entertainment.<\/p>\n

He simply said, \u201cThere will be no wedding today. A serious family matter has come to light, and I ask everyone to respect my daughter’s privacy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then he left.<\/p>\n

At the hospital, Lucy cried when she saw him.<\/p>\n

\u201cDad, I’m sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ernest sat beside her bed.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor what?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI should’ve told you sooner.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo. I should’ve listened sooner.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lucy explained that she’d become suspicious months earlier after seeing Patricia photograph documents in Ernest’s study. She began collecting evidence when she discovered emails discussing changes to accounts and property ownership.<\/p>\n

When Lucy confronted Patricia, the argument became physical.<\/p>\n

Matthew had seen enough to understand one thing clearly:<\/p>\n

Patricia had hurt his mother.<\/p>\n

The police investigation took months.<\/p>\n

Not every document on the USB proved criminal conduct, but the video and financial records were enough to trigger a much deeper examination. Ernest’s attorney discovered that several papers Patricia had encouraged him to sign were far more significant than she’d claimed.<\/p>\n

Fortunately, most had not yet been finalized.<\/p>\n

Ernest changed his passwords, froze access to sensitive accounts, updated his estate documents, and removed Patricia from every position of trust she’d gradually acquired.<\/p>\n

But the hardest part wasn’t financial.<\/p>\n

It was admitting how easily he’d dismissed Lucy’s concerns because Patricia had always framed them as jealousy.<\/p>\n

One Sunday afternoon, weeks later, Ernest sat with Lucy and Matthew in his backyard.<\/p>\n

Matthew was pushing a toy truck through the grass.<\/p>\n

Ernest watched him for a while.<\/p>\n

Then he said, \u201cHe saved me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lucy shook her head.<\/p>\n

Lucy laughed for the first time in weeks.<\/p>\n
