Richard released my arm immediately.<\/p>\n

“Your suitcase was brought here because someone searched your cabin,” he said. “And those photographs aren’t mine.”<\/p>\n

I stared at him.<\/p>\n

“Then why are they in your room?”<\/p>\n

The alarm continued pulsing through the corridor. A recorded voice instructed passengers to remain calm and await directions.<\/p>\n

Richard glanced toward the staircase.<\/p>\n

“Because I’ve been trying to find out who’s following you.”<\/p>\n

I almost laughed. It sounded absurd.<\/p>\n

“Following me? I’m a retired librarian from Ohio.”<\/p>\n

“I know.”<\/p>\n

That frightened me more.<\/p>\n

“How do you know that?”<\/p>\n

Richard reached slowly into his jacket and pulled out his wallet. Behind his driver’s license was an identification card from a private security firm.<\/p>\n

“I’m retired, mostly. The cruise line hired the company I consult for after several passengers reported thefts on previous sailings.”<\/p>\n

I looked at the photographs again.<\/p>\n

“Why me?”<\/p>\n

“We didn’t know at first.”<\/p>\n

A crew member appeared at the end of the corridor and shouted that there had been smoke detected in a service area. Richard called back that we were coming.<\/p>\n

Then he lowered his voice.<\/p>\n

“Yesterday, security caught someone using a cloned key card to enter your cabin.”<\/p>\n

My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n

“My cabin?”<\/p>\n

“He left before they could stop him. We moved your luggage because we thought it might contain whatever he was looking for.”<\/p>\n

“Without telling me?”<\/p>\n

“That wasn’t my decision.”<\/p>\n

“But pretending to meet me was?”<\/p>\n

Richard’s silence gave me the answer.<\/p>\n

I felt suddenly foolish.<\/p>\n

Breakfasts. Walks around the deck. Champagne.<\/p>\n

“Was any of it real?”<\/p>\n

His face changed.<\/p>\n

“At the beginning? I sat beside you because I was supposed to.”<\/p>\n

That hurt more than I expected.<\/p>\n

“And afterward?”<\/p>\n

“Afterward I kept sitting there because I wanted to.”<\/p>\n

I shook my head.<\/p>\n

“You don’t get to make that sound romantic.”<\/p>\n

“I know.”<\/p>\n

Another crew member appeared and ordered us upstairs.<\/p>\n

This time I followed.<\/p>\n

We reached a passenger lounge where several dozen people had gathered. The alarm stopped minutes later. Apparently, a small electrical fire had been contained.<\/p>\n

Two ship security officers approached us.<\/p>\n

One carried my suitcase.<\/p>\n

The other asked me a question I wasn’t prepared for.<\/p>\n

“Ma’am, did your late husband ever collect watches?”<\/p>\n

I blinked.<\/p>\n

“Yes.”<\/p>\n

Richard looked at me.<\/p>\n

“What kind?”<\/p>\n

“Old watches. Mostly inexpensive ones. Why?”<\/p>\n

“Did you bring one aboard?”<\/p>\n

I thought about the small silver watch in my jewelry case.<\/p>\n

“My husband’s. I always travel with it.”<\/p>\n

The officers exchanged glances.<\/p>\n

One opened my suitcase after asking permission. My jewelry case was inside, but the watch wasn’t.<\/p>\n

I felt sick.<\/p>\n

Richard crouched beside the suitcase.<\/p>\n

“Was anything unusual about it?”<\/p>\n

“No. It didn’t even work.”<\/p>\n

Then I remembered something.<\/p>\n

A month before my husband died, he’d taken it to be repaired. When it came back, he joked that the repair had cost more than the watch was worth.<\/p>\n

“Wait.”<\/p>\n

Everyone looked at me.<\/p>\n

“The back was different afterward. Thicker.”<\/p>\n

Security took me to an office, where they explained what they’d learned.<\/p>\n

The man who had entered my cabin had been identified as another passenger. Years earlier, he’d worked with my husband at a small import company.<\/p>\n

That was when everything finally began making sense.<\/p>\n

My husband had once discovered financial irregularities at work. He’d cooperated quietly with investigators but died before the case went anywhere.<\/p>\n

Apparently, someone believed he’d kept records.<\/p>\n

Inside the watch.<\/p>\n

The photographs had been found in the suspect’s cabin during the fire alarm evacuation. He’d been watching me from the beginning of the cruise, waiting for an opportunity to search my belongings.<\/p>\n

“Where is he now?” I asked.<\/p>\n

“In custody until we reach port,” the security officer said.<\/p>\n

I looked at Richard.<\/p>\n

“And him?”<\/p>\n

Richard gave me a tired smile.<\/p>\n

“Unfortunately, I’m still here.”<\/p>\n

I didn’t smile back.<\/p>\n

Not yet.<\/p>\n

The next morning, we docked in Miami.<\/p>\n

Authorities met the ship, took statements, and collected the watch, which had been recovered from the suspect. Investigators later told me it contained a tiny memory card hidden beneath the back plate.<\/p>\n

I didn’t care what was on it.<\/p>\n

I cared that the man I’d begun trusting had lied to me.<\/p>\n

Richard understood.<\/p>\n

He didn’t ask me to forgive him.<\/p>\n

Before we left the terminal, he handed me a piece of paper.<\/p>\n

“My number. My real one. No assignment, no security company, no secrets.”<\/p>\n

I folded it and put it in my purse.<\/p>\n

For three weeks, I didn’t call.<\/p>\n

Then one Sunday morning, while drinking coffee alone, I looked at the empty chair across from me.<\/p>\n

I remembered how Richard took his coffee too dark and always stole the little strawberry jam packets at breakfast.<\/p>\n

So I called.<\/p>\n

“Hello?”<\/p>\n

“It’s me.”<\/p>\n

There was a pause.<\/p>\n

Then, softly, “I’m glad.”<\/p>\n

“Don’t get excited. You owe me several explanations.”<\/p>\n

“I probably owe you breakfast, too.”<\/p>\n

“Several breakfasts.”<\/p>\n

He laughed.<\/p>\n

Six months later, we took another cruise.<\/p>\n

This time I booked it myself.<\/p>\n

Richard paid for his own cabin.<\/p>\n

And before we boarded, I made him turn out every pocket in his suitcase.<\/p>\n

He protested.<\/p>\n

I told him trust had to start somewhere.<\/p>\n
