“And you didn’t tell me?”<\/p>\n

Her expression changed from confusion to fury.<\/p>\n
“So instead you waited until she was born?”<\/p>\n
“I thought maybe the clinic was wrong.”<\/p>\n
“And the birthmark proves what?” I asked.<\/p>\n
Ryan shook his head.<\/p>\n
“It doesn’t prove anything. I panicked.”<\/p>\n
That was when the pediatrician returned.<\/p>\n
She told us the baby was healthy. The mark appeared to be a common vascular birthmark and, by itself, said nothing about paternity.<\/p>\n
Ryan closed his eyes.<\/p>\n

“Did you hear that?”<\/p>\n
“Yes.”<\/p>\n
“No, Ryan. Did you actually hear it? You looked at our daughter for ten seconds and decided she was evidence.”<\/p>\n

Melissa walked toward the bassinet when the nurse brought the baby back.<\/p>\n
She lifted her daughter carefully.<\/p>\n
The baby made a tiny sound and curled against her chest.<\/p>\n
Melissa cried again, but differently this time.<\/p>\n
“I’m taking my daughter home.”<\/p>\n
Ryan stared at her.<\/p>\n

“You can come with us when you’re ready to be her father. But I’m not abandoning her because a fertility clinic may have made a mistake.”<\/p>\n
I watched Ryan’s face crumble.<\/p>\n
For the first time since I’d known him, I didn’t rush to comfort him.<\/p>\n

The hospital contacted the fertility clinic, and lawyers became involved almost immediately. DNA testing later confirmed that Melissa was the baby’s biological mother, while Ryan was not her biological father. Further testing confirmed that the clinic had indeed used sperm from the wrong donor.<\/p>\n
