Nathan opened the bedroom door and switched on the light.<\/p>\n

Patricia shot upright.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat on earth?\u201d<\/p>\n

Her hair was flattened on one side, and she was wearing an old T-shirt. She grabbed her glasses from the nightstand and squinted at us.<\/p>\n

\u201cNathan? What are you doing here?\u201d<\/p>\n

He looked at his watch.<\/p>\n

\u201cSleeping?\u201d<\/p>\n

She stared at him.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s five in the morning!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThen why are you in my bedroom?\u201d<\/p>\n

Nathan held up his phone.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just wanted a picture.\u201d<\/p>\n

Patricia\u2019s expression changed instantly.<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t you dare.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nathan didn\u2019t take one.<\/p>\n

Instead, he lowered the phone.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy not?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause I\u2019m in bed! I look terrible, and I wasn\u2019t expecting anyone.\u201d<\/p>\n

I stood silently behind him.<\/p>\n

Nathan nodded.<\/p>\n

\u201cExactly.\u201d<\/p>\n

Patricia looked from him to me, and I watched the realization settle across her face.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is ridiculous,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s completely different.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause it\u2019s five in the morning.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nathan leaned against the doorframe.<\/p>\n

\u201cOkay. What time am I allowed to photograph you in bed and post it online without asking?\u201d<\/p>\n

She opened her mouth, then closed it.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat isn\u2019t what I did.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s exactly what you did.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI was making a point.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSo am I.\u201d<\/p>\n

Patricia pulled the blanket higher.<\/p>\n

Nathan\u2019s voice remained calm.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou entered our house using an emergency key when there was no emergency. You walked into our bedroom without knocking. You photographed my wife while she had a 102-degree fever after she specifically told you not to. Then you posted that photograph publicly to embarrass her.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t know she was that sick.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou saw her medicine.\u201d<\/p>\n

Patricia glanced at me.<\/p>\n

For the first time since we arrived, she seemed uncomfortable rather than angry.<\/p>\n

\u201cI thought she was exaggerating.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat makes it worse, Mom.\u201d<\/p>\n

She looked offended.<\/p>\n

Nathan continued before she could interrupt.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf I posted a picture of you right now with a caption saying, \u2018Some people are still sleeping while everyone else is getting ready for work,\u2019 would that be fair?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause you\u2019d be deliberately making me look lazy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nathan nodded.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s what you did to her.\u201d<\/p>\n

The room went quiet.<\/p>\n

I had imagined confronting Patricia several times during those miserable days. In every version, I had a perfect speech prepared.<\/p>\n

Standing there, I didn\u2019t want one.<\/p>\n

I just wanted her to understand.<\/p>\n

Patricia finally looked directly at me.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou really were that sick?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy didn\u2019t you tell me how bad it was?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI did tell you I was sick.\u201d<\/p>\n

She looked down.<\/p>\n

That answer seemed to land harder than anything Nathan had said.<\/p>\n

After a moment, Nathan reached into his jacket pocket and placed something on her dresser.<\/p>\n

Our spare key.<\/p>\n

Patricia frowned.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s that?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe key you used.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re taking it away?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe changed the locks yesterday.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her head snapped toward him.<\/p>\n

\u201cNathan!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cEmergency access requires trust. You used it because you wanted to check whether my wife was out of bed.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m your mother.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd she\u2019s my wife. Neither relationship gives anyone permission to walk into somebody else\u2019s bedroom.\u201d<\/p>\n

Patricia\u2019s face turned bright red.<\/p>\n

I almost felt sorry for her.<\/p>\n

Almost.<\/p>\n

Then Nathan took his phone out again.<\/p>\n

\u201cDelete the post.\u201d<\/p>\n

She hesitated.<\/p>\n

\u201cNow, Mom.\u201d<\/p>\n

Patricia reached for her phone.<\/p>\n

She opened Facebook and deleted the photograph in front of us.<\/p>\n

Nathan shook his head.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s not quite enough.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat else do you want?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe people who saw the accusation should see the correction.\u201d<\/p>\n

Patricia stared at him.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou want me to post an apology?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI want you to tell the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n

For several seconds, she said nothing.<\/p>\n

Then she started typing.<\/p>\n

She showed us the screen before posting it.<\/p>\n

\u201cI owe my daughter-in-law an apology. I entered her home without warning while she was sick, took a photograph without her permission, and posted it with an unfair caption. I was wrong to do that.\u201d<\/p>\n

She looked at me.<\/p>\n

\u201cIs that enough?\u201d<\/p>\n

I read it twice.<\/p>\n

\u201cAdd that I had a fever and had been told by my doctor to rest.\u201d<\/p>\n

Patricia\u2019s lips tightened, but she added it.<\/p>\n

Then she posted the apology.<\/p>\n

We left a few minutes later.<\/p>\n

On the drive home, I finally asked Nathan the question that had been bothering me.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy did you wait several days?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause if I\u2019d called her that night, we would\u2019ve screamed at each other. She would\u2019ve defended herself, I would\u2019ve gotten angrier, and nothing would\u2019ve changed.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSo your solution was dragging me out of bed before sunrise?\u201d<\/p>\n

He smiled.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou have to admit, the timing helped.\u201d<\/p>\n

I laughed for the first time since Patricia\u2019s post.<\/p>\n

But there was one more conversation we needed to have.<\/p>\n

\u201cNathan, next time, don\u2019t make me wait several days wondering whether you\u2019re going to stand up for me.\u201d<\/p>\n

His smile disappeared.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re right.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI trusted you. But I also needed to know you understood how much it hurt.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI did. I should\u2019ve told you what I was planning.\u201d<\/p>\n

That mattered almost as much as his confrontation with Patricia.<\/p>\n

Things with my MIL didn\u2019t magically become perfect afterward.<\/p>\n

She was embarrassed. For a while, she was noticeably quieter around me. But she also stopped arriving unannounced.<\/p>\n

A month later, she came over for dinner.<\/p>\n

She rang the doorbell.<\/p>\n

When I opened the door, she held up a container of chicken soup.<\/p>\n

\u201cI called first,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou did.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I waited for you to answer the door.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou did that too.\u201d<\/p>\n

She gave me an awkward smile.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m learning.\u201d<\/p>\n

I stepped aside and let her in.<\/p>\n

The spare key was never returned.<\/p>\n

And strangely, our relationship improved without it.<\/p>\n

Patricia hadn\u2019t needed unrestricted access to our house to be part of our family.<\/p>\n

She had needed a boundary.<\/p>\n
