Melissa snatched the paper from his hand.<\/p>\n
Even through the windshield, I could see the argument begin.<\/p>\n

Not because anything was funny, but because he still thought there was a “we.”<\/p>\n
The next morning, Frank’s attorney, Mr. Keller, called.<\/p>\n
“Daniel contacted me.”<\/p>\n
“I’m sure he did.”<\/p>\n
“He asked whether the sale could be reversed.”<\/p>\n
“And?”<\/p>\n
“It can’t.”<\/p>\n

I waited another day before agreeing to meet him at a coffee shop.<\/p>\n

“You forget things sometimes.”<\/p>\n
“So do you.”<\/p>\n
He looked down.<\/p>\n
I leaned closer.<\/p>\n
“Daniel, I am seventy years old. I misplaced my glasses twice and forgot one dentist appointment. That is not incapacity.”<\/p>\n
“I know.”<\/p>\n
“Then why were you discussing control of my finances?”<\/p>\n
He didn’t answer.<\/p>\n
I didn’t rescue him from the silence.<\/p>\n
Finally, he rubbed both hands over his face.<\/p>\n
“Melissa and I are in debt.”<\/p>\n
There it was.<\/p>\n
They had refinanced their own house. Credit cards. A bad investment with one of Melissa’s relatives. The Europe trip, he admitted, had mostly gone onto another card.<\/p>\n
They had begun talking about my house as the solution.<\/p>\n
Not immediately, he insisted.<\/p>\n
Someday.<\/p>\n
After I “didn’t need it anymore.”<\/p>\n
“But then you wouldn’t consider moving,” he said.<\/p>\n
I stared at him.<\/p>\n
“Listen to yourself.”<\/p>\n
His eyes filled.<\/p>\n
“I’m sorry.”<\/p>\n
“For which part?”<\/p>\n
He swallowed.<\/p>\n
“The voicemail.”<\/p>\n
“Only the voicemail?”<\/p>\n
He shook his head.<\/p>\n
“No. All of it.”<\/p>\n
I wanted to believe him immediately.<\/p>\n
That was the terrible thing about being his mother. Some part of me still saw the eight-year-old boy who crawled into my bed during thunderstorms.<\/p>\n
But love didn’t require stupidity.<\/p>\n
“I won’t give you money,” I said.<\/p>\n
“I’m not asking.”<\/p>\n
“Not now.”<\/p>\n
He flinched.<\/p>\n
I continued.<\/p>\n
“You will never have access to my accounts. You will never hold power of attorney for me. My estate documents have been changed.”<\/p>\n
His face went pale, but he nodded.<\/p>\n
“And if you ever tell anyone I’m confused or incompetent because I refuse to do what you want, our relationship ends.”<\/p>\n
“I understand.”<\/p>\n
“No, Daniel. You’re going to have to prove that you understand.”<\/p>\n
That took time.<\/p>\n
For months, I saw him only occasionally.<\/p>\n
He stopped arriving with advice about my finances. He stopped asking what I’d paid for the new place. When he visited, he brought coffee, not paperwork.<\/p>\n
Melissa didn’t come.<\/p>\n
Eventually, Daniel told me they were in counseling and selling things to deal with their debt.<\/p>\n
I didn’t ask for details.<\/p>\n
Their marriage was theirs to repair or ruin.<\/p>\n

That evening, after he left, I sat on the screened porch and watched the light disappear across the lake.<\/p>\n
