Andrei slowly put down his fork.<\/p>\n

\u201cPetya next door repaired the roof when it leaked. Galya took me to the hospital when I got sick. I bought my medicine with my pension.\u201d<\/p>\n

Andrei suddenly found it difficult to breathe.<\/p>\n

\u201cThen why did you keep all of it?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAt first I thought you might need it someday. Later I thought I would leave it to my grandson.\u201d<\/p>\n

She paused.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd eventually I decided it could pay for my funeral, so you wouldn\u2019t have to worry about that either.\u201d<\/p>\n

Andrei stood so suddenly that the chair scraped against the floor.<\/p>\n

\u201cMom, don\u2019t talk like that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy not? I\u2019m eighty-two. What should I talk about? My plans for the next twenty years?\u201d<\/p>\n

He turned toward the window.<\/p>\n

For the first time in years, he felt tears burning behind his eyes.<\/p>\n

\u201cI thought I was helping you.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou were.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n

He shook his head.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou just showed me that I wasn\u2019t helping at all.\u201d<\/p>\n

His mother remained silent for several seconds.<\/p>\n

Then she said quietly:<\/p>\n

\u201cMoney is useful, son. But it can\u2019t sit across the table and drink tea with you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Andrei did not sleep that night.<\/p>\n

His childhood bedroom had barely changed.<\/p>\n

An old toy car with one missing wheel was still on the shelf.<\/p>\n

In a drawer he found a school notebook from eighth grade.<\/p>\n

His mother had even kept one of his old jackets.<\/p>\n

Around two in the morning, he got up to get some water.<\/p>\n

For the first time since he had arrived, she genuinely smiled.<\/p>\n

He called his deputy and said he would be away for a while.<\/p>\n

Only a folded piece of paper.<\/p>\n

It contained two sentences:<\/p>\n

\u201cSon, I saved the money you sent me.<\/p>\n

But the most valuable things you ever gave me were my last three springs with you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Andrei kept that note for the rest of his life.<\/p>\n

Not in a safe.<\/p>\n

Not in his office.<\/p>\n

He carried it in his wallet.<\/p>\n

Because twenty lost years can never truly be returned.<\/p>\n
