I stared through the small window in Mateo\u2019s hospital-room door.<\/p>\n

He looked tiny beneath the white blanket.<\/p>\n

\u201cCould he have walked on it?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNot without extreme pain.\u201d<\/p>\n

I swallowed.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe crawled seven blocks.\u201d<\/p>\n

The doctor stopped writing.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWith his sister following him.\u201d<\/p>\n

His expression changed immediately.<\/p>\n

Within half an hour, a social worker and a detective were sitting with me.<\/p>\n

They asked about Rebeca.<\/p>\n

About my brother.<\/p>\n

About the last time I had physically seen the children.<\/p>\n

That question nearly destroyed me.<\/p>\n

\u201cAlmost eight months.\u201d<\/p>\n

The social worker looked up.<\/p>\n

\u201cEight months?\u201d<\/p>\n

The detective photographed the messages.<\/p>\n

Then he asked:<\/p>\n

\u201cDid the children attend school?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMateo should.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhich school?\u201d<\/p>\n

I gave him the name.<\/p>\n

He stepped outside to make a call.<\/p>\n

When he returned, his face was grim.<\/p>\n

\u201cMateo hasn’t attended school in nearly two months.\u201d<\/p>\n

My mouth went dry.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow is that possible?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cRebeca told the school he was receiving medical treatment and submitted paperwork requesting temporary home instruction.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWas he?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe’re checking.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then Valentina began screaming from the room next door.<\/p>\n

I ran inside.<\/p>\n

She was standing on the bed, pulling at her IV line.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo downstairs! No downstairs!\u201d<\/p>\n

I held her carefully.<\/p>\n

Those four words changed the investigation again.<\/p>\n

Police went to Rebeca\u2019s house immediately.<\/p>\n

I wasn\u2019t allowed to go with them.<\/p>\n

For two hours, I knew nothing.<\/p>\n

There were two thin mattresses on the concrete floor.<\/p>\n

Empty water bottles.<\/p>\n

A plastic bucket.<\/p>\n

Children\u2019s clothing.<\/p>\n

A broken night-light.<\/p>\n

And on the inside of the door were dozens of scratches.<\/p>\n

Some were low enough to have been made by Valentina.<\/p>\n

Police also found a baby monitor camera mounted high in one corner.<\/p>\n

The memory card was missing.<\/p>\n

But the camera connected to Wi-Fi.<\/p>\n

Investigators obtained a warrant for Rebeca\u2019s devices.<\/p>\n

That evening, they found the recordings.<\/p>\n

I wish they hadn\u2019t told me what was on them.<\/p>\n

But part of me needed to know.<\/p>\n

One clip showed Mateo limping across the basement while carrying a cup of water to Valentina.<\/p>\n

Another showed him pounding on the door.<\/p>\n

\u201cPlease, she needs food.\u201d<\/p>\n

No one answered.<\/p>\n

Then came the recording from six days earlier.<\/p>\n

Mateo had climbed onto a plastic storage container near a small basement window.<\/p>\n

He was trying to reach the latch.<\/p>\n

The container collapsed.<\/p>\n

He fell.<\/p>\n

His leg struck the edge of a concrete step.<\/p>\n

He screamed.<\/p>\n

Valentina ran toward him.<\/p>\n

For several minutes, Mateo lay on the floor crying.<\/p>\n

Eventually, the basement door opened.<\/p>\n

Rebeca came downstairs.<\/p>\n

Mateo had remembered.<\/p>\n

For three years.<\/p>\n

Through every locked door.<\/p>\n

Every missed birthday.<\/p>\n

Every unanswered visit.<\/p>\n

He remembered where I lived.<\/p>\n

Seven blocks away.<\/p>\n

When Rebeca was arrested, she insisted the children were lying.<\/p>\n

Then investigators showed her the recordings.<\/p>\n

Her story changed.<\/p>\n

She claimed she was overwhelmed.<\/p>\n

Then she blamed grief.<\/p>\n

Then money.<\/p>\n

Then the children themselves.<\/p>\n

But none of those explanations changed what had happened.<\/p>\n

The investigation eventually uncovered something else.<\/p>\n

The money my brother had left for his children had been disappearing.<\/p>\n

Insurance payments.<\/p>\n

Survivor benefits.<\/p>\n

Savings intended for school and medical expenses.<\/p>\n

While Mateo and Valentina were sleeping on basement mattresses, Rebeca had been using part of that money for herself.<\/p>\n

Months later, I became their legal guardian.<\/p>\n

The first night they slept in my house, I left every door open.<\/p>\n

He should have needed cartoons.<\/p>\n

And adults who noticed when he disappeared.<\/p>\n

So the promise I made wasn’t that Mateo would always be strong.<\/p>\n
