Dad stared at me for several seconds.<\/p>\n

Then, unexpectedly, Emily began laughing.<\/p>\n

\u201cGrandpa didn\u2019t mean my body, Mom!\u201d<\/p>\n

I looked down at her.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMy figure.\u201d<\/p>\n

She pointed toward the object beneath the sheet.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe wooden one.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dad slowly closed his eyes.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, Lord,\u201d he muttered.<\/p>\n

Then he looked at me.<\/p>\n

\u201cClaire, before you accuse me of anything else, please lift that sheet.\u201d<\/p>\n

I kept one arm around Emily.<\/p>\n

With the other, I grabbed the sheet and pulled.<\/p>\n

I froze.<\/p>\n

Underneath stood a nearly life-sized wooden figure of a little girl.<\/p>\n

It wasn\u2019t finished. One arm was still rough wood, the dress had only been partly painted, and the face had no eyes yet.<\/p>\n

But I recognized it immediately.<\/p>\n

The little girl was holding a basket of apples.<\/p>\n

Her hair was carved into two braids.<\/p>\n

And around her neck was a tiny wooden pendant shaped like a heart.<\/p>\n

My breath caught.<\/p>\n

I knew that girl.<\/p>\n

Not Emily.<\/p>\n

Me.<\/p>\n

\u201cDad\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

He sat heavily on an old stool.<\/p>\n

\u201cYour mother asked me to make it.\u201d<\/p>\n

I stared at him.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy mother?\u201d<\/p>\n

He nodded.<\/p>\n

\u201cBefore she died.\u201d<\/p>\n

Suddenly, everything in the room looked different.<\/p>\n

Against one wall were photographs.<\/p>\n

Dozens of them.<\/p>\n

Pictures of me as a child.<\/p>\n

Me at six, standing beneath the apple tree.<\/p>\n

Me at eight with missing front teeth.<\/p>\n

Me sitting on Dad\u2019s shoulders.<\/p>\n

And then I noticed newer photographs beside them.<\/p>\n

Emily.<\/p>\n

Standing in almost identical poses.<\/p>\n

Holding the same basket.<\/p>\n

Sitting beneath the same apple tree.<\/p>\n

Dad pointed toward the wooden figure.<\/p>\n

\u201cYour mother wanted it for the garden.\u201d<\/p>\n

I couldn\u2019t speak.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe said that after she was gone, she wanted you to have something that reminded you of who you were before life made you so serious.\u201d<\/p>\n

His voice broke slightly.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe made me promise.\u201d<\/p>\n

Emily tugged at my sleeve.<\/p>\n

\u201cGrandpa couldn’t remember exactly how your arms and shoulders looked when you were little. He said I’m built like you were.\u201d<\/p>\n

I looked at Dad.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo when you said she had a beautiful figure\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI was talking about her proportions for the sculpture.\u201d<\/p>\n

He rubbed both hands across his face.<\/p>\n

\u201cI told her she had almost exactly the same proportions you had at seven. I needed her to stand beside the carving so I could correct the arms and shoulders.\u201d<\/p>\n

I suddenly felt sick for an entirely different reason.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd the secret?\u201d<\/p>\n

Dad looked embarrassed.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat was my stupidity.\u201d<\/p>\n

He wanted to finish the sculpture before my birthday.<\/p>\n

Emily had discovered it accidentally during one of her visits and begged to help.<\/p>\n

Dad had turned the upstairs room into a workshop because he didn\u2019t want me seeing the sculpture before it was finished.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy did you say seeing it might scare me?\u201d<\/p>\n

Dad looked toward the wooden figure.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause of the face.\u201d<\/p>\n

I stepped closer.<\/p>\n

There was something unusual beneath the unfinished surface.<\/p>\n

Dad opened an old wooden box on the table.<\/p>\n

Inside was a plaster mold.<\/p>\n

I recognized the features immediately.<\/p>\n

My mother.<\/p>\n

I covered my mouth.<\/p>\n

Dad\u2019s eyes filled with tears.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe didn\u2019t want the sculpture to be only you.\u201d<\/p>\n

He touched the unfinished wooden face.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe wanted it to become three generations.\u201d<\/p>\n

The body was based on me as a child.<\/p>\n

The braids and posture came from Emily.<\/p>\n

But the face\u2014<\/p>\n

The face was going to be my mother\u2019s.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe called it The Girls in My Garden<\/em>,\u201d Dad whispered.<\/p>\n

For a long moment, nobody spoke.<\/p>\n

Then another realization hit me.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou could have told me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, Dad. You really could have told me.\u201d<\/p>\n

My voice shook.<\/p>\n

\u201cI spent last night terrified.\u201d<\/p>\n

His expression changed immediately.<\/p>\n

I explained exactly what Emily had said.<\/p>\n

Beautiful figure.<\/p>\n

Everyone would notice.<\/p>\n

The locked room.<\/p>\n

The promise not to tell me.<\/p>\n

As I repeated the words, Dad\u2019s face collapsed.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, Claire.\u201d<\/p>\n

He looked at Emily and then back at me.<\/p>\n

\u201cI never thought about how that sounded.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI did.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI understand.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo secrets like this anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dad nodded immediately.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re right.\u201d<\/p>\n

I crouched in front of Emily.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd you need to understand something too.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her smile disappeared.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou never have to keep a secret from me because an adult asks you to. Not Grandpa. Not a teacher. Not anyone.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut this was a surprise.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI know, sweetheart. Surprises are different because they have an ending. Like hiding a birthday present until Saturday. But if someone tells you that something happening to you must stay secret from Mom forever, you tell me.\u201d<\/p>\n

She thought about that.<\/p>\n

\u201cEven Grandpa?\u201d<\/p>\n

Dad answered before I could.<\/p>\n

\u201cEspecially if it’s something that makes you uncomfortable.\u201d<\/p>\n

Emily nodded.<\/p>\n

Then she wrapped her arms around me.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m sorry, Mom.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou did nothing wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n

I looked over her shoulder at my father.<\/p>\n

Neither had he.<\/p>\n

But something important had happened anyway.<\/p>\n

My fear hadn\u2019t been foolish.<\/p>\n

I had heard something concerning from my seven-year-old daughter, and instead of dismissing it because the person involved was someone I loved, I had checked.<\/p>\n

This time, there was an innocent explanation.<\/p>\n

That didn\u2019t mean checking had been wrong.<\/p>\n

Dad finished the sculpture six weeks later.<\/p>\n

On my birthday, he carried it into the garden and placed it beneath Mom\u2019s apple tree.<\/p>\n

When he finally removed the cloth, I cried before I could stop myself.<\/p>\n

The carving somehow looked like all three of us.<\/p>\n

My mother\u2019s smile.<\/p>\n

My childhood posture.<\/p>\n

Emily\u2019s braids.<\/p>\n

At the bottom, Dad had carved a sentence.<\/p>\n

I bent down to read it.<\/p>\n

It was something Mom used to tell me whenever I was frightened as a child:<\/p>\n

\u201cLove should always make you feel safe enough to speak.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dad stood beside me quietly.<\/p>\n

\u201cI added that part after what happened.\u201d<\/p>\n

I took his hand.<\/p>\n

Emily came running across the lawn.<\/p>\n

\u201cMom! Look at the back!\u201d<\/p>\n

There was another tiny inscription.<\/p>\n

This one had clearly been carved by Emily herself, the letters crooked and uneven:<\/p>\n

\u201cNO MORE SECRET PROJECTS.\u201d<\/p>\n

I laughed so hard I started crying again.<\/p>\n

Dad laughed too.<\/p>\n

And from that day forward, there weren\u2019t any.<\/p>\n

There were surprises.<\/p>\n

There were birthday presents hidden in closets.<\/p>\n

There were Christmas gifts wrapped behind closed doors.<\/p>\n

But there were no secrets that made a child believe she wasn\u2019t allowed to talk to her mother.<\/p>\n

Because that frightening misunderstanding taught all three of us something I never forgot:<\/p>\n

Trusting someone with your child doesn\u2019t mean ignoring your instincts.<\/p>\n

And protecting your child doesn\u2019t require assuming the worst.<\/p>\n
