At least 38 people have died following the magnitude 7.7 earthquake that struck the coast of the Indonesian island of Flores, in the eastern part of the archipelago, on Saturday, according to an updated death toll released by Indonesia\u2019s National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), EFE reports.<\/p>\n
BNPB chief Suharyanto explained at a press conference that \u201c38 deaths, two serious injuries, 11 minor injuries, and 2,000 evacuations have been recorded,\u201d without specifying where the deaths occurred.<\/p>\n
The earthquake struck at around 6:00 a.m. local time (10:00 p.m. GMT on Friday), with its epicenter located approximately 62 kilometers northwest of Ende, the most populous city on Flores, home to around 90,000 people. The quake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).<\/p>\n
More than 50 homes on the island suffered severe damage, while landslides were reported in several parts of Flores, according to the BNPB. The airport serving the tourist town of Komodo was also affected, although it remains operational, Transport Minister Dudy Purwagandhi said.<\/p>\n
Around 2,000 residents were evacuated from coastal areas following the powerful earthquake, which triggered a tsunami warning that was later lifted.<\/p>\n
An estimated 2 million people live on the island of Flores, where Ende and Maumere are the main cities.<\/p>\n
