Her department had just landed the biggest account of the year, and someone had ordered champagne.<\/p>\n

Then another bottle.<\/p>\n

By the time Diana called a rideshare, she was sitting on a bench outside the restaurant with her heels beside her and her mother\u2019s latest words echoing in her head.<\/p>\n

At least she has a family now.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cRidiculous,\u201d Diana muttered.<\/p>\n

\u201cTalking to yourself?\u201d<\/p>\n

She looked up.<\/p>\n

Walter Reed stood a few feet away.<\/p>\n

Everyone at Azimuth knew Walter.<\/p>\n

He was fifty-five, quiet, broad-shouldered, and worked as a cook in the executive cafeteria. He remembered who wanted extra onions, who was allergic to peanuts, and who pretended not to order dessert before returning ten minutes later for pie.<\/p>\n

Diana occasionally stayed late enough to eat dinner there.<\/p>\n

Walter had made her grilled cheese more than once when she was too exhausted to decide what she wanted.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat are you doing here?\u201d she asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy sister owns the restaurant.\u201d<\/p>\n

Diana laughed.<\/p>\n

\u201cOf course she does.\u201d<\/p>\n

Walter sat at the opposite end of the bench.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou okay?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMy mother thinks my life is a failure because nobody has married me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Walter smiled faintly.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat seems harsh.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou married?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNot anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cGirlfriend?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n

Diana stared at him with the solemn concentration only a drunk person could consider subtle.<\/p>\n

\u201cThen marry me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Walter blinked.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou heard me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI certainly did.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI have a job. You have a job. You make excellent soup. I own an apartment.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cStrong foundation.\u201d<\/p>\n

She pointed at him.<\/p>\n

\u201cExactly.\u201d<\/p>\n

Walter laughed.<\/p>\n

Then, to her surprise, he said, \u201cAll right.\u201d<\/p>\n

The next morning, Diana woke with a headache and a text from Walter.<\/p>\n

Still getting married?<\/em><\/p>\n

She stared at it.<\/p>\n

She could have typed No.<\/em><\/p>\n

Instead, perhaps because she was embarrassed, stubborn, or simply exhausted by everyone treating marriage as the final measure of adulthood, she wrote:<\/p>\n

You said yes.<\/em><\/p>\n

His answer arrived immediately.<\/p>\n

I did.<\/em><\/p>\n

Three hours later, they were standing at the county courthouse.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know we can leave,\u201d Walter said quietly.<\/p>\n

Diana looked at him.<\/p>\n

He was wearing a clean navy shirt instead of his kitchen uniform.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n

Neither did she.<\/p>\n

It was absurd.<\/p>\n

Impulsive.<\/p>\n

But it was also the first decision Diana had made in years without considering what her mother, employees, board members, or anyone else expected.<\/p>\n

So they signed the papers.<\/p>\n

Monday morning, Diana entered Azimuth headquarters expecting gossip.<\/p>\n

Instead, at 9:15, her assistant appeared.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe CEO?\u201d<\/p>\n

Diana folded her arms.<\/p>\n

Bennett gave a short, incredulous laugh.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, Diana. Walter works in the cafeteria.\u201d<\/p>\n

He opened a drawer and removed an old corporate photograph.<\/p>\n

There were six people standing in front of Azimuth\u2019s first headquarters.<\/p>\n

One of them was Walter.<\/p>\n

Twenty years younger.<\/p>\n

Diana almost laughed.<\/p>\n

Walter leaned against the counter.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou never asked how much money I had.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI asked what you did.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I told you. I cook here.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat is technically true and completely misleading.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n

That answer disarmed her.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n

Walter was quiet for a moment.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause twenty years ago, everyone knew what I owned before they knew me.\u201d<\/p>\n

His wife had died after a long illness, he explained. Afterward, the boardroom felt meaningless. He sold most of his holdings and eventually returned to something he’d always loved\u2014cooking.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe cafeteria employees treat me like Walter,\u201d he said. \u201cNot Mr. Reed. I prefer it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Diana’s anger softened, but didn’t disappear.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou still should’ve told me before the courthouse.\u201d<\/p>\n
