At first, I assumed Emma and Daniel were already seeing her together.<\/p>\n

Then I noticed something handwritten on the back.<\/p>\n

\u201cEmma \u2014 call me anytime. You do not need his permission.\u201d<\/p>\n

I stared at those words for a long time.<\/p>\n

The next morning, I didn’t call the therapist.<\/p>\n

That frightened me more than anything Daniel had said the night before.<\/p>\n

So I told her about my call to David.<\/p>\n

Not because I wanted her to file for divorce.<\/p>\n

Not because I had already decided what her marriage was.<\/p>\n

I simply wanted her to know that if she ever needed somewhere to stay, money for an attorney, transportation, counseling, or just someone to sit beside her while she figured things out, she had it.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo conditions,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n

Emma started crying.<\/p>\n

Quietly at first.<\/p>\n

Then so hard she covered her face.<\/p>\n

\u201cI thought you’d say I was stupid.\u201d<\/p>\n

I moved beside her.<\/p>\n

His face changed.<\/p>\n

Daniel answered for her.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe lives here.\u201d<\/p>\n

I kept looking at my daughter.<\/p>\n

\u201cEmma?\u201d<\/p>\n

She took a breath.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n

Daniel went completely silent.<\/p>\n

That was what left him speechless.<\/p>\n

Not a threat.<\/p>\n

Not some elaborate revenge.<\/p>\n

Just the realization that Emma had answered for herself.<\/p>\n

She packed one suitcase.<\/p>\n

Daniel followed us from room to room, alternating between anger and disbelief.<\/p>\n

Emma zipped the suitcase.<\/p>\n
