I was sitting on the edge of the bed drinking coffee when she burst in.<\/p>\n
“Do what?”<\/p>\n
Macy held up her phone.<\/p>\n
“Daniel canceled everything!”<\/p>\n
I stared at her.<\/p>\n
“What are you talking about?”<\/p>\n
“The spa appointment. Our dinner reservation. The boat tour. He canceled all of it.”<\/p>\n
Before I could answer, Daniel appeared in the doorway behind her.<\/p>\n
“I canceled your plans,” he said. “Mom had nothing to do with it.”<\/p>\n
Macy spun around.<\/p>\n
“Are you serious?”<\/p>\n
“Completely.”<\/p>\n
Daniel stepped inside and closed the door.<\/p>\n
He wasn’t yelling. Somehow, that made the room feel even more tense.<\/p>\n
“You told Mom she was brought here to babysit.”<\/p>\n
Macy crossed her arms. “We have three kids, Daniel. Someone has to watch them.”<\/p>\n
“We do.”<\/p>\n
She stared at him.<\/p>\n
“They’re our children.”<\/p>\n
“Your mother helps us all the time.”<\/p>\n
“Exactly. She helps us. That doesn’t make her our employee.”<\/p>\n
Macy looked at me.<\/p>\n
“So you ran to him and complained?”<\/p>\n
“I didn’t complain,” I said quietly. “Daniel asked why I hadn’t gone anywhere without the kids. I told him what you told me.”<\/p>\n
Her cheeks flushed.<\/p>\n
Daniel shook his head.<\/p>\n
“And then she told me the part about ‘earning back’ the money.”<\/p>\n
Macy’s expression changed.<\/p>\n
“I didn’t mean it like that.”<\/p>\n
“How else could you possibly mean it?”<\/p>\n
She started explaining that she’d been overwhelmed for months. She said she’d imagined this vacation as her chance to sleep late, sit on the beach, and have time alone with Daniel.<\/p>\n
I understood that part.<\/p>\n
Three young children were exhausting.<\/p>\n
But Daniel didn’t let her turn exhaustion into an excuse.<\/p>\n
“You needed a break,” he said. “So did Mom. The difference is that Mom didn’t invite you somewhere under false pretenses and then hand you a bill.”<\/p>\n
“I didn’t hand her a bill.”<\/p>\n
“You told her she owed us labor because I paid for her room.”<\/p>\n
Macy went quiet.<\/p>\n
Then Daniel told us what he’d done.<\/p>\n
He had canceled the activities they’d planned for themselves over the next two days and replaced them with something very different.<\/p>\n
He’d booked me a room at a smaller oceanfront hotel about twenty minutes away for the remaining four nights of the trip.<\/p>\n
Alone.<\/p>\n
My mouth fell open.<\/p>\n
“Daniel, absolutely not. You’ve already spent too much.”<\/p>\n
“No, Mom.”<\/p>\n
He smiled at me.<\/p>\n
“You’ve waited sixty-five years to see the ocean. You’re going to see it without carrying a diaper bag.”<\/p>\n
Macy looked furious.<\/p>\n
“So I’m supposed to stay here with three kids by myself?”<\/p>\n
Daniel raised an eyebrow.<\/p>\n
“No. I’m staying too. We’re taking care of our children together.”<\/p>\n
“And our vacation?”<\/p>\n
“This is our vacation. They’re part of it.”<\/p>\n
She walked out.<\/p>\n
I immediately told Daniel I didn’t want to cause trouble in his marriage.<\/p>\n
He sat beside me.<\/p>\n
“You didn’t.”<\/p>\n
Then his voice softened.<\/p>\n
“I invited you because I wanted to do something nice for you. I should’ve noticed sooner what was happening.”<\/p>\n
I told him he couldn’t watch everything his wife said or did.<\/p>\n
“No,” he replied. “But I can make sure you aren’t treated like you owe me because I bought you something.”<\/p>\n
That afternoon, Daniel drove me to the other hotel.<\/p>\n
It wasn’t fancy. My room had a small balcony, a coffeemaker that took forever, and a view of the ocean between two buildings.<\/p>\n
To me, it was perfect.<\/p>\n
For the first time since we’d arrived, I woke the next morning with nowhere I had to be.<\/p>\n
I walked down to the beach before breakfast.<\/p>\n
I took off my sandals and stood ankle-deep in the water.<\/p>\n
Nobody called “Grandma.”<\/p>\n
Nobody needed sunscreen.<\/p>\n
Nobody had lost a plastic shovel.<\/p>\n
I simply stood there.<\/p>\n
I hadn’t realized how badly I needed that silence.<\/p>\n
The next few days weren’t completely solitary. Daniel brought the children over one afternoon, and we built a crooked sandcastle together. Another evening, all five of them met me for dinner.<\/p>\n
Macy barely spoke at first.<\/p>\n
Afterward, while Daniel took the children for ice cream, she stayed behind.<\/p>\n
“I’m sorry,” she said.<\/p>\n
I looked at her.<\/p>\n
She seemed uncomfortable, but sincere.<\/p>\n
“I was exhausted before we even got here,” she continued. “When Daniel said he was bringing you, I started thinking that meant we’d finally have childcare. I should’ve asked. Instead, I decided that’s what you were here for.”<\/p>\n
I nodded.<\/p>\n
“What hurt wasn’t watching the kids, Macy. I love them.”<\/p>\n
“I know.”<\/p>\n
“It was being told I had to earn my place here.”<\/p>\n
She looked down.<\/p>\n
“I know that too.”<\/p>\n
I didn’t tell her everything was fine, because it wasn’t.<\/p>\n
But I accepted her apology.<\/p>\n
When we flew home, things between us were still a little awkward. Over time, though, they improved.<\/p>\n
More importantly, something changed in me.<\/p>\n
For years, I’d been so accustomed to helping people that I’d stopped noticing when helping turned into being taken for granted.<\/p>\n
Daniel had noticed.<\/p>\n
On our last morning at the beach, he came to my hotel early and found me sitting on the sand.<\/p>\n
“Was it worth the wait?” he asked.<\/p>\n
I looked at the waves.<\/p>\n
“It was.”<\/p>\n
Then I laughed.<\/p>\n
“Although next time, I’m coming by myself.”<\/p>\n
Daniel laughed too.<\/p>\n
“Deal.”<\/p>\n
I still babysit my grandchildren.<\/p>\n
But now Macy asks.<\/p>\n
And sometimes I say no.<\/p>\n
The following summer, I went back to the ocean.<\/p>\n
I paid for the trip myself after saving a little each month.<\/p>\n
When Daniel offered to help, I thanked him and declined.<\/p>\n
Not because I believed I had to earn anything.<\/p>\n
I simply wanted the pleasure of booking the room myself.<\/p>\n
