“He doesn’t look like me.”<\/p>\n
For a second, I thought I’d misunderstood him.<\/p>\n
I was exhausted, still shaking from the delivery, and our son had been in the world for barely ten minutes. Yet Aaron wasn’t smiling anymore. He was staring at the baby’s dark hair and tiny face as though he were searching for evidence of something.<\/p>\n
“What did you say?”<\/p>\n
Aaron glanced at the nurse, then back at me.<\/p>\n
“I said he doesn’t look like me.”<\/p>\n
“He’s ten minutes old, Aaron.”<\/p>\n
The nurse shifted uncomfortably beside him. “Newborns change quite a bit in the first few weeks.”<\/p>\n
But Aaron barely seemed to hear her.<\/p>\n
Our son began to fuss, and instead of pulling him closer, Aaron handed him back to the nurse.<\/p>\n
That hurt more than his words.<\/p>\n
For months, this was the moment he’d talked about. His son. The boy he’d wanted so desperately. And now that the baby was finally here, Aaron was looking at him like a stranger.<\/p>\n
“What exactly are you trying to say?” I asked.<\/p>\n
He rubbed the back of his neck.<\/p>\n
“Nothing. Forget it.”<\/p>\n
“No. You don’t get to say something like that and then tell me to forget it.”<\/p>\n

I felt something inside me go cold.<\/p>\n
“You think I cheated on you?”<\/p>\n
“I didn’t say that.”<\/p>\n
“You didn’t have to.”<\/p>\n
Aaron walked toward the window. “I’m just confused.”<\/p>\n
I looked down when the nurse returned our son to me. His tiny hand curled against my hospital gown.<\/p>\n
I had carried him for nine months. I’d spent years raising four daughters while going through pregnancy after pregnancy, partly because the man standing across from me couldn’t let go of his dream of having a boy.<\/p>\n
And now I was being asked, indirectly but unmistakably, to prove that the child he’d wanted was his.<\/p>\n
“Get out,” I said.<\/p>\n
Aaron turned around.<\/p>\n
“Come on, Emily.”<\/p>\n

“You’re exhausted.”<\/p>\n

“I shouldn’t have said it like that.”<\/p>\n
I looked at him. “Like what?”<\/p>\n
He sighed.<\/p>\n
“I was overwhelmed. I had this picture in my head of what my son would look like.”<\/p>\n
“Your son.”<\/p>\n
“You know what I mean.”<\/p>\n
Unfortunately, I did.<\/p>\n
He sat beside the bed.<\/p>\n
“I love you. I just think maybe a DNA test would put this behind us.”<\/p>\n
That was the moment something became painfully clear.<\/p>\n
This wasn’t about the baby’s face.<\/p>\n
It was about trust.<\/p>\n
“You can have your test,” I said.<\/p>\n
Aaron visibly relaxed.<\/p>\n
“But understand something. The result isn’t going to fix what you just broke.”<\/p>\n
His expression changed.<\/p>\n
“Emily\u2014”<\/p>\n
“You spent years asking me for another baby because you wanted a son. I went through five pregnancies. And the first thing you did when you finally held him was question whether he belonged to you.”<\/p>\n
“I made a mistake.”<\/p>\n
“No. You had a thought, believed it enough to accuse me, and now you want a laboratory to reassure you.”<\/p>\n
He had no answer.<\/p>\n
We did the test.<\/p>\n
Not because I owed Aaron proof, but because I refused to let him spend years allowing that suspicion to poison our son’s life.<\/p>\n
The result arrived a little over a week later.<\/p>\n
Aaron was the father.<\/p>\n
Of course he was.<\/p>\n
He sat at our kitchen table staring at the paper while our daughters played in the living room and the baby slept against my chest.<\/p>\n
Finally, he whispered, “I’m sorry.”<\/p>\n
This time, he sounded different.<\/p>\n
I sat across from him.<\/p>\n
“Do you know what bothers me most?”<\/p>\n
He shook his head.<\/p>\n
“You wanted a son so badly that you turned him into an idea before he was even born. He had to look a certain way. He had to carry your name. He had to complete something for you.”<\/p>\n
Aaron looked toward the bassinet.<\/p>\n
“And our daughters have been hearing that their entire lives.”<\/p>\n
His face tightened.<\/p>\n
“I never told them they weren’t enough.”<\/p>\n
“You didn’t have to.”<\/p>\n
That landed harder than anything else I’d said.<\/p>\n
Our oldest daughter, Madison, was seven. She had already asked me twice why Dad was “so excited about finally getting a boy.”<\/p>\n
I hadn’t known how to answer her.<\/p>\n
Aaron did something afterward that surprised me.<\/p>\n
He didn’t defend himself.<\/p>\n
Over the next several weeks, he started paying attention to things he’d apparently never noticed before: the way he called the baby “my little man” while referring to the girls collectively as “you guys,” the relatives who joked that he’d finally gotten his heir, even the congratulations that treated our son’s birth like some special victory.<\/p>\n
One evening, he gathered the girls around the kitchen table.<\/p>\n
“I need to tell you something,” he said.<\/p>\n
They stared at him.<\/p>\n
“I’ve talked too much about wanting a boy. And I think I made it sound like our family was missing something before your brother came.”<\/p>\n
Madison looked down at her hands.<\/p>\n
Aaron continued.<\/p>\n
“It wasn’t. I was wrong.”<\/p>\n
Our second daughter asked quietly, “So you weren’t sad we were girls?”<\/p>\n
Aaron’s eyes filled.<\/p>\n
“I was never sad that you were you. But I had a stupid idea in my head about what a family was supposed to look like, and that’s something I should’ve figured out a long time ago.”<\/p>\n
Nothing changed overnight.<\/p>\n
I didn’t suddenly forget what happened in the hospital, and Aaron didn’t expect me to.<\/p>\n
We started counseling a few months later. It wasn’t dramatic. There were uncomfortable conversations, apologies that took more than one attempt, and habits that were harder to change than either of us expected.<\/p>\n
But Aaron changed where it mattered.<\/p>\n
Our son eventually grew into the same brown eyes Aaron had been searching for in that hospital room.<\/p>\n
By then, nobody cared.<\/p>\n
Especially Aaron.<\/p>\n
And years later, when someone at a family barbecue jokingly told him he must have been relieved to “finally get his boy,” Aaron looked toward our five children running across the yard.<\/p>\n
