A murmur spread through the church.<\/p>\n
I finally remembered.<\/p>\n
Years ago, I’d volunteered with a nonprofit that quietly helped struggling families stay afloat.<\/p>\n
We never asked for publicity.<\/p>\n
We simply helped.<\/p>\n
Ethan continued.<\/p>\n
“You found out I was about to quit school so I could work full-time.”<\/p>\n
“You convinced me not to.”<\/p>\n
“You personally arranged a scholarship that paid for my final two years of high school.”<\/p>\n

“You thought I’d judge her because she wasn’t wealthy.”<\/p>\n
She nodded.<\/p>\n
“I was embarrassed that she lived so simply.”<\/p>\n
Ethan gently took my hand.<\/p>\n

“I thought…”<\/p>\n
“I promised it would be yours.”<\/p>\n
With trembling hands, she fastened it around her neck.<\/p>\n
