One was the lease agreement.<\/p>\n
Another was a moving truck receipt.<\/p>\n
The third was a copy of every utility bill from the past five years.<\/p>\n
Each one highlighted with the account holder’s name.<\/p>\n

“What is all this?” he asked.<\/p>\n
“I spent the morning speaking with the landlord.”<\/p>\n
His smile disappeared.<\/p>\n
“The lease has always been in my name.”<\/p>\n

“I added you as an occupant.”<\/p>\n

“Mine.”<\/p>\n
He swallowed hard.<\/p>\n
“You took everything?”<\/p>\n
“No.”<\/p>\n
I pointed toward his guitar.<\/p>\n
“I left everything that belongs to you.”<\/p>\n
Silence filled the apartment.<\/p>\n
Finally he spoke.<\/p>\n
“So… you’re leaving me?”<\/p>\n
I shook my head.<\/p>\n
“No.”<\/p>\n
“I’m leaving the version of myself that accepted being treated like I was convenient instead of valued.”<\/p>\n
He rubbed both hands through his hair.<\/p>\n
“I didn’t mean what I said.”<\/p>\n
“But you believed it.”<\/p>\n
“I was frustrated.”<\/p>\n
“So was I.”<\/p>\n
“For nine years.”<\/p>\n
