By lunchtime, I couldn’t ignore the questions anymore.<\/p>\n

Instead of calling Julian, I called my friend Natalie.<\/p>\n

“I never went to a casino.”<\/p>\n

He looked exhausted.<\/p>\n

“It started with online sports betting.”<\/p>\n

“My debt got bigger than I admitted.”<\/p>\n

“I stopped before it destroyed us.”<\/p>\n

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.<\/p>\n

“I’ve been attending Gamblers Anonymous meetings at the motel conference room.”<\/p>\n

“The parking lot is the only place available.”<\/p>\n

He reached into his wallet.<\/p>\n

From behind an old receipt, he pulled out a folded attendance card.<\/p>\n

Each meeting had been signed by the group facilitator.<\/p>\n
