The room fell silent.<\/p>\n
Claire’s smile disappeared.<\/p>\n
My mother looked confused.<\/p>\n
I forced a small laugh.<\/p>\n
“What do you mean, sweetheart?”<\/p>\n
Ari pointed toward the hallway.<\/p>\n
“At night.”<\/p>\n
I felt my stomach tighten.<\/p>\n
“Who talks at night?”<\/p>\n
“Claire.”<\/p>\n
“And Mommy.”<\/p>\n
Claire blinked.<\/p>\n
“Honey, I don’t…”<\/p>\n
But Ari continued before anyone else could speak.<\/p>\n
“I hear her.”<\/p>\n
Every eye in the room turned toward Claire.<\/p>\n
She looked just as puzzled as the rest of us.<\/p>\n
I knelt beside Ari.<\/p>\n
“Can you tell me exactly what you hear?”<\/p>\n
She nodded.<\/p>\n
“When you go to sleep, Claire goes into Mommy’s room.”<\/p>\n
“Our room?” I asked.<\/p>\n
“Yes.”<\/p>\n
“Then she says, ‘I hope I’m doing okay.'”<\/p>\n
Claire covered her mouth.<\/p>\n
A tear rolled down her cheek.<\/p>\n
“I’ve… I’ve never said that in front of her.”<\/p>\n
I stared at her.<\/p>\n
“You’ve done that?”<\/p>\n
She nodded quietly.<\/p>\n
“Almost every night.”<\/p>\n
No one spoke.<\/p>\n
She looked at me.<\/p>\n
“I know it sounds strange.”<\/p>\n
After taking a deep breath, she continued.<\/p>\n
“When I moved in, I realized I was living in a house filled with memories of Sarah.”<\/p>\n
She glanced toward Ari.<\/p>\n
“I never wanted her to feel like I was trying to replace her mother.”<\/p>\n
“So after everyone was asleep… I’d sit for a few minutes by Sarah’s photograph.”<\/p>\n
My mother whispered, “The one in your bedroom.”<\/p>\n
Claire nodded.<\/p>\n
“I’d tell her I was trying my best.”<\/p>\n
“I’d say things like, ‘I hope I’m taking good care of them.'”<\/p>\n
“And sometimes…”<\/p>\n
She smiled sadly.<\/p>\n
“I’d ask her to help me be the kind of mother Ari deserved.”<\/p>\n
The room remained quiet.<\/p>\n
I looked back at my daughter.<\/p>\n
“Is that what you meant?”<\/p>\n
Ari nodded.<\/p>\n
“Mommy never answers.”<\/p>\n
Claire let out a shaky laugh through her tears.<\/p>\n
“I didn’t think she could hear me.”<\/p>\n
I gently hugged Ari.<\/p>\n
“You weren’t scared?”<\/p>\n
She shook her head.<\/p>\n
“No.”<\/p>\n
“Then why did you call Claire a monster?”<\/p>\n
She frowned as though the answer were obvious.<\/p>\n
“Because monsters talk to people nobody else can see.”<\/p>\n
For a second, no one moved.<\/p>\n
Then my sister laughed softly.<\/p>\n
Not because it was funny.<\/p>\n
Because the innocent logic of a four-year-old suddenly made perfect sense.<\/p>\n
Soon my mother laughed too, wiping tears from her eyes.<\/p>\n
Even I couldn’t help smiling.<\/p>\n
Claire knelt beside us.<\/p>\n
“I’m sorry if I frightened you.”<\/p>\n
Ari reached out and touched Claire’s hand.<\/p>\n
“I don’t think you’re a bad monster.”<\/p>\n
Claire laughed.<\/p>\n
“What kind am I?”<\/p>\n
“A nice one.”<\/p>\n
That night, after everyone had gone home and Ari was asleep, Claire and I stood together in our bedroom.<\/p>\n
Sarah’s framed photograph still rested on the dresser.<\/p>\n
Claire looked at it quietly.<\/p>\n
“I think it’s time I stop talking only to her.”<\/p>\n
She slipped her hand into mine.<\/p>\n
“And start talking more to you.”<\/p>\n
I squeezed her hand.<\/p>\n
“I wish you’d told me.”<\/p>\n
“I didn’t want you to think I was trying to compete with her memory.”<\/p>\n
“You never could.”<\/p>\n
She nodded.<\/p>\n
“I know.”<\/p>\n
“And I don’t want to.”<\/p>\n
Before turning off the light, I looked once more at Sarah’s picture.<\/p>\n
For the first time in years, it didn’t feel like choosing between the past and the future.<\/p>\n
It felt like honoring the woman I had lost while allowing myself to love the woman who had walked beside us with kindness and respect.<\/p>\n
