What did you say to him?”

“I said no.”

“He says you were cruel.”

“I was clear,” I said. “There’s a difference. He wanted my cabin for ten days. I said it wasn’t available.”

A long, theatrical sigh. “This is exactly what I mean about you. You take one little thing and you make it a whole thing. Family shares, Sophie. That’s what families do.”

I walked out onto the deck again. The snow had softened every edge of the mountain, and somehow the cold made her voice sound very far away.

“Mom,” I said, “when did the family ever share with me?”

“Don’t be dramatic.”

“I’m not. I’m asking a real question. Ten Christmases. Ten summers. The lake house, the beach, Disney. Nathan’s kids have photos from all of it. I’m not in a single one.” I kept my voice even. “So help me understand what ‘family shares’ means, because from where I’m standing it only ever pointed one direction.”

She was quiet for a moment, and I could hear her recalibrating, reaching for the next lever. “Your father would be so hurt to hear you talk like this.”

“Dad drank through most of those trips. I doubt he’d remember them.”

“Sophie.”

“I’m not doing this anymore,” I said, and I was surprised by how gentle it came out. Not angry. Just done. “You’re welcome to be in my life. All of you are. But you don’t get to spend ten years telling me I’m the problem and then treat my house like a timeshare when it’s convenient. That’s not sharing. That’s using. And I’m out of it.”

“So that’s it? You’d cut off your own mother over a vacation house?”

“No,” I said. “I’d keep a boundary over a vacation house. You’re the one deciding what that costs.”

She hung up on me too. Like mother, like son.

For a few days, the silence felt heavy, the way an old habit feels when you finally set it down. I kept waiting for the guilt to arrive. It didn’t. What arrived instead, a week later, was a text from an unknown number.

Aunt Sophie? It’s Maddie. Dad doesn’t know I’m texting. I just wanted to say I don’t think you’re negative. I think you’re the only one who ever told me the truth about stuff. I’m sorry they left you out. Your cabin looks really pretty.

Maddie was Nathan’s oldest, sixteen now. The last time I’d really talked to her she’d been a kid I wasn’t allowed to be around unsupervised.

I read it three times. Then I wrote back: Thank you, Maddie. That means more than you know. The door here is always open to you — anytime, no permission from anyone required. And I meant it in a way I had never meant it about Nathan.

That winter, I filled the cabin with the people who’d shown up for me when my family didn’t — an old friend from nursing school, a neighbor who’d helped me move, a coworker going through a divorce who needed somewhere quiet to breathe. We cooked too much food and stayed up too late and laughed until the windows fogged.

Nobody once told me I was bringing the mood down.

In the spring, Maddie asked if she could visit for a weekend. I picked her up from the bus station myself. She spent two days hiking, reading by the fire, and talking to me the way I’d always wished someone in that family would. When I dropped her back off, she hugged me hard and said, “This was the best weekend I’ve had in a long time.”

Driving home through the pass, I thought about all those years of being the one left behind, the one with the bad energy. It turned out the energy was never the problem. The problem was that I’d kept offering a seat at a table where no one would pull out a chair.

So I built my own table. And the people with good energy? They found their way to it on their own.

I let it ring twice before I answered, because I already knew the shape of what was coming. “Sophie.” Her voice was tight, the one she used right before she made a problem into my problem. “Nathan is beside himself.
