“Because I promised your father I would.”<\/p>\n

I frowned.<\/p>\n

“What?”<\/p>\n

“A week before he died, he called me.”<\/p>\n

“He already knew he wasn’t going to get better.”<\/p>\n

Patrick reached into his glove compartment and pulled out a folded envelope.<\/p>\n

“He asked me to keep this until the day you finally asked.”<\/p>\n

My hands shook as I unfolded the letter.<\/p>\n

It was Dad’s handwriting.<\/p>\n

“Dear kid,”<\/em><\/p>\n

“If you’re reading this, Patrick has kept his promise.”<\/em><\/p>\n

“Your mother has always loved to dance.”<\/em><\/p>\n

“She stopped dancing the day she married me\u2014not because she wanted to, but because I never liked it.”<\/em><\/p>\n

“That is one of the greatest regrets of my life.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Tears blurred my vision.<\/p>\n

Patrick continued quietly.<\/p>\n

“The last thing your father asked me was this…”<\/p>\n

“When I’m gone, don’t let her spend the rest of her life sitting alone in silence.”<\/em><\/p>\n

“Take her dancing once a week until she smiles again.”<\/em><\/p>\n

“Not because you’re replacing me…”<\/em><\/p>\n

“But because she’ll never ask anyone herself.”<\/em><\/p>\n

I couldn’t speak.<\/p>\n

Patrick smiled sadly.<\/p>\n

“I tried to refuse.”<\/p>\n

“He insisted.”<\/p>\n

“He said I was the only person she’d trust.”<\/p>\n

The next Thursday, I quietly followed them\u2014not to interrupt, but to watch from a distance.<\/p>\n

In the middle of the park, beneath strings of warm lights, a small community band played old swing songs.<\/p>\n

My mother laughed as Patrick gently spun her around.<\/p>\n

She wasn’t dancing with a new husband.<\/p>\n

She wasn’t replacing my father.<\/p>\n

She was keeping alive a part of herself that grief had buried.<\/p>\n

As the music ended, she looked up toward the evening sky and whispered something I couldn’t hear.<\/p>\n

Patrick stepped back respectfully, giving her a moment alone.<\/p>\n

When she finally noticed me watching, she walked over nervously.<\/p>\n

“Are you upset?”<\/p>\n

I hugged her.<\/p>\n

“No.”<\/p>\n

I wiped away a tear.<\/p>\n

“I think Dad would have loved this.”<\/p>\n

She smiled through tears.<\/p>\n

“He did.”<\/p>\n
