He thought I was about to embarrass myself.<\/p>\n

Instead, I smiled even wider.<\/p>\n

“I’d like to thank my husband,” I began.<\/p>\n

“For teaching me something very important.”<\/p>\n

The guests nodded politely.<\/p>\n

Carl lifted his beer.<\/p>\n

“He taught me,” I continued, “that some people only appreciate sacrifices they never have to make themselves.”<\/p>\n

His smile weakened.<\/p>\n

“For the past two years, while Carl was unemployed, I worked full-time.”<\/p>\n

Several guests exchanged glances.<\/p>\n

“I paid the mortgage.”<\/p>\n

“I paid the utilities.”<\/p>\n

“I paid for both family cars.”<\/p>\n

“I paid our children’s daycare.”<\/p>\n

“I paid for every birthday present sitting inside this house.”<\/p>\n

Carl slowly lowered his drink.<\/p>\n

“I also woke up every night with our baby.”<\/p>\n

“Cooked.”<\/p>\n

“Cleaned.”<\/p>\n

“Worked.”<\/p>\n

“And somehow still found time to remind my husband that losing a job didn’t make him less valuable.”<\/p>\n

The backyard had become completely silent.<\/p>\n

I looked directly at Carl.<\/p>\n

“But apparently…”<\/p>\n

“…gaining a few pounds after giving birth does.”<\/p>\n

Someone quietly set down a plate.<\/p>\n

I continued.<\/p>\n

“So today, my husband compared me to Alice.”<\/p>\n

I smiled at her.<\/p>\n

“Alice, you look wonderful.”<\/p>\n

She looked embarrassed.<\/p>\n

“This isn’t about you.”<\/p>\n

She nodded gratefully.<\/p>\n

“It’s about the man who forgot that the body he’s criticizing is the same body that carried both of his children.”<\/p>\n

Carl finally interrupted.<\/p>\n

“Emily…”<\/p>\n

“No.”<\/p>\n

“It’s my turn.”<\/p>\n

I took a deep breath.<\/p>\n

“You know what hurts the most?”<\/p>\n

“It isn’t that you think another woman is prettier.”<\/p>\n

“It’s that after everything we’ve been through…”<\/p>\n

“…you decided the person who deserved to be humiliated in front of friends and family…”<\/p>\n

“…was the woman who never stopped carrying this family.”<\/p>\n

Carl’s mother quietly wiped away a tear.<\/p>\n

His brother stared at the ground.<\/p>\n

Carl looked around the yard.<\/p>\n

No one was laughing anymore.<\/p>\n

Then I reached into my purse.<\/p>\n

“I also brought you one more birthday gift.”<\/p>\n

I handed Carl an envelope.<\/p>\n

He frowned.<\/p>\n

“What’s this?”<\/p>\n

“Open it.”<\/p>\n

Inside was a printed spreadsheet.<\/p>\n

Every expense I’d paid over the previous twenty-three months.<\/p>\n

Mortgage.<\/p>\n

Insurance.<\/p>\n

Groceries.<\/p>\n

Car payments.<\/p>\n

Medical bills.<\/p>\n

Children’s clothes.<\/p>\n

Utilities.<\/p>\n

The final number was highlighted in yellow.<\/p>\n

Carl looked up.<\/p>\n

“I don’t understand.”<\/p>\n

“You don’t have to pay me back.”<\/p>\n

“I just wanted you to see what supporting someone actually looks like.”<\/p>\n

He couldn’t speak.<\/p>\n

“And one more thing.”<\/p>\n

I removed my wedding ring.<\/p>\n

Not dramatically.<\/p>\n

Not angrily.<\/p>\n

Just quietly.<\/p>\n

“I deserve a partner who notices my sacrifices before he notices someone else’s swimsuit.”<\/p>\n

I placed the ring on the table beside his untouched birthday cake.<\/p>\n

Then I picked up my children’s hands.<\/p>\n

“We’re going to Grandma’s for a few days.”<\/p>\n

As I walked toward the gate, no one tried to stop me.<\/p>\n
