Hidden behind a stone archway, I carefully peeked into the courtyard.<\/p>\n

David stood with a younger man in a navy suit.<\/p>\n

Neither of them had noticed me.<\/p>\n

The younger man looked worried.<\/p>\n

“You can’t keep doing this, David,” he said.<\/p>\n

“You become attached every time.”<\/p>\n

David sighed.<\/p>\n

“I know.”<\/p>\n

“You promised Mom.”<\/p>\n

My heart skipped.<\/p>\n

Mom?<\/strong><\/p>\n

The younger man rubbed his forehead.<\/p>\n

“The doctors said your memory is getting worse.”<\/p>\n

“You already forgot this restaurant was one of your favorites.”<\/p>\n

“You told her it was your first visit.”<\/p>\n

David looked embarrassed.<\/p>\n

“I honestly believed it was.”<\/p>\n

Silence settled over the courtyard.<\/p>\n

The younger man lowered his voice.<\/p>\n

“You don’t have much time before the disease progresses.”<\/p>\n

“You can’t keep pretending everything is normal.”<\/p>\n

I felt my knees weaken.<\/p>\n

Disease?<\/p>\n

What disease?<\/p>\n

David stared toward the harbor.<\/p>\n

“I know exactly how much time I have.”<\/p>\n

“That’s why I wanted one perfect week.”<\/p>\n

The younger man looked away.<\/p>\n

“You’ve spent three years refusing to travel.”<\/p>\n

“Refusing to meet anyone.”<\/p>\n

“And now…”<\/p>\n

He smiled softly.<\/p>\n

“You finally smiled again.”<\/p>\n

David laughed quietly.<\/p>\n

“Because she reminded me how to live.”<\/p>\n

I felt tears filling my eyes.<\/p>\n

There had been no affair.<\/p>\n

No deception.<\/p>\n

Only a frightened man trying to enjoy what might be one of the last periods of his life before Alzheimer’s slowly stole his memories.<\/p>\n

I accidentally stepped on a loose stone.<\/p>\n

Both men turned.<\/p>\n

David’s face immediately fell.<\/p>\n

“You heard…”<\/p>\n

I nodded.<\/p>\n

He slowly walked toward me.<\/p>\n

“I’m sorry.”<\/p>\n

“I never meant to lie.”<\/p>\n

“I wasn’t hiding another woman.”<\/p>\n

“I was hiding what I’m becoming.”<\/p>\n

His voice broke.<\/p>\n

“I wanted you to know me…”<\/p>\n

“…before I forgot who I was.”<\/p>\n

I wrapped my arms around him.<\/p>\n

“You should have trusted me.”<\/p>\n

“I was afraid.”<\/p>\n

“I’ve already buried one great love.”<\/p>\n

“I couldn’t bear watching someone disappear a second time.”<\/p>\n

I took his hand.<\/p>\n

“Then don’t ask me to leave.”<\/p>\n

His eyes filled with tears.<\/p>\n

“I’m not asking.”<\/p>\n

“I’m asking whether you’ll stay… while I still remember how lucky I am.”<\/p>\n

The next morning, I postponed my flight.<\/p>\n

One week became two.<\/p>\n

Two became a month.<\/p>\n

Eventually, we decided to spend half the year in Malta and half near my family.<\/p>\n

Some mornings David forgot the name of the caf\u00e9 where we had breakfast.<\/p>\n

Sometimes he asked me to remind him how we had met.<\/p>\n

Every single time…<\/p>\n

I smiled…<\/p>\n

Turned my map upside down…<\/p>\n

And answered exactly the same way.<\/p>\n

“You saw a lost woman who had finally decided to say yes.”<\/p>\n

He always laughed.<\/p>\n

Then he reached for my hand.<\/p>\n

And for as long as he remembered…<\/p>\n
