Mason stared at the two officers.<\/p>\n

Beatrice’s smile disappeared.<\/p>\n

Richard slowly lowered his eyes.<\/p>\n

My attorney, Rebecca Collins, calmly placed a thick folder on the bedside table.<\/p>\n

“Good afternoon,” she said.<\/p>\n

The signature at the bottom looked like mine.<\/p>\n

Except…<\/p>\n

It wasn’t.<\/p>\n

“They were planning to submit this next Monday,” Rebecca said.<\/p>\n

“Her employer had already received an email requesting a meeting.”<\/p>\n

Mason’s face turned pale.<\/p>\n

“It was only a draft.”<\/p>\n

Rebecca smiled.<\/p>\n

“So was the power of attorney.”<\/p>\n

She produced another document.<\/p>\n

This one authorized Mason to control every financial decision in my name.<\/p>\n

It carried another forged signature.<\/p>\n

The officer looked directly at Mason.<\/p>\n

“Did you prepare these documents?”<\/p>\n

“I…”<\/p>\n

“They’re family paperwork.”<\/p>\n

“I was helping my wife.”<\/p>\n

Beatrice suddenly interrupted.<\/p>\n

“She’s emotionally unstable.”<\/p>\n

“After losing the baby, she became impossible.”<\/p>\n

Rebecca immediately pressed Play on my phone.<\/p>\n

The hospital room filled with Mason’s recorded voice.<\/p>\n

“After this, she can quit her job.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Even Richard looked horrified.<\/p>\n

The older officer slowly closed his notebook.<\/p>\n

“Mrs. Walker…”<\/p>\n

He turned toward Beatrice.<\/p>\n

“Are you denying these statements?”<\/p>\n

She opened her mouth.<\/p>\n

Nothing came out.<\/p>\n

Richard quietly removed his wedding ring.<\/p>\n

“I didn’t touch her.”<\/p>\n

“I told them we should take her to the hospital.”<\/p>\n

“I should’ve called 911.”<\/p>\n

His voice cracked.<\/p>\n

“I’m sorry.”<\/p>\n
