The hotel manager listened patiently while I explained everything.<\/p>\n

“I’d also like every room charge from now on billed separately.”<\/p>\n
“The kids’ activities will stay on my room.”<\/p>\n
“Everything Clara orders…”<\/p>\n
“Goes to hers.”<\/p>\n
The manager grinned.<\/p>\n
“I believe we can arrange that.”<\/p>\n
The next morning…<\/p>\n
Clara stormed into my room.<\/p>\n
“What have you done?”<\/p>\n
I sipped my coffee.<\/p>\n
“What do you mean?”<\/p>\n
“They moved me!”<\/p>\n
“They said I have my own room now!”<\/p>\n

“Exactly.”<\/p>\n
“But who’s going to watch the children while Martin and I relax?”<\/p>\n

“I assumed you invited yourself because you wanted a vacation.”<\/p>\n

Martin appeared a few moments later.<\/p>\n
“What’s going on?”<\/p>\n
“The hotel separated us,” Clara snapped.<\/p>\n
“They’re treating me like a stranger!”<\/p>\n

“No, ma’am.”<\/p>\n
“We’re simply honoring the request to give each paying guest the accommodations they prefer.”<\/p>\n

She turned toward Martin.<\/p>\n
“Tell your wife to fix it.”<\/p>\n

My husband asked to see the schedule she’d given me.<\/p>\n
He read it silently.<\/p>\n
Then he looked at his mother.<\/p>\n
“You actually expected Emily to spend the entire vacation serving us?”<\/p>\n
Clara crossed her arms.<\/p>\n
“She’s the mother.”<\/p>\n
