Although uncommon in many developed countries, myiasis still occurs in some parts of the world, especially when an open wound is neglected and flies are able to lay eggs in damaged tissue.<\/p>\n

What Is Myiasis?<\/h2>\n

Myiasis is the infestation of a wound\u2014or, less commonly, body cavities\u2014by fly larvae. After the eggs hatch, the larvae begin feeding on dead tissue and, in some cases, damaged tissue surrounding the wound.<\/p>\n

Hundreds of fly species exist, but only a small number are responsible for causing this condition in humans.<\/p>\n

How Does It Happen?<\/h2>\n

In most cases, infestation does not occur overnight. Several factors increase the risk, including:<\/p>\n

  • Open wounds that are not properly cleaned.<\/li>\n
  • Dressings that are changed too infrequently.<\/li>\n
  • Poor hygiene.<\/li>\n
  • People who are bedridden or unable to care for their wounds.<\/li>\n
  • Diabetes or other conditions that slow the healing process.<\/li>\n
  • Warm climates and environments with large numbers of flies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Under these conditions, a fly may lay eggs inside a wound, and the first larvae can appear within 8 to 24 hours<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    What Symptoms Can Occur?<\/h2>\n

    Depending on the severity, a person may experience:<\/p>\n

    • A disturbing sensation of movement inside the wound.<\/li>\n
    • Significant pain or discomfort.<\/li>\n
    • Heavy drainage and an unpleasant odor.<\/li>\n
    • Swelling and redness.<\/li>\n
    • Fever if a bacterial infection develops alongside the infestation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Some patients do not seek medical care until they actually notice the larvae because the early symptoms can resemble those of a typical wound infection.<\/p>\n

      Is It a Medical Emergency?<\/h2>\n

      Yes. A wound infested with larvae should be evaluated by a healthcare professional as soon as possible.<\/p>\n

      Treatment may include:<\/p>\n

      • Complete removal of the larvae.<\/li>\n
      • Surgical wound cleaning (debridement) when necessary.<\/li>\n
      • Sterile wound dressings.<\/li>\n
      • Antibiotics if a bacterial infection is present.<\/li>\n
      • Ongoing monitoring until the wound has healed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        Attempting to remove the larvae at home is not recommended, as some may remain deep within the tissue and increase the risk of complications.<\/p>\n

        Are All Larvae Dangerous?<\/h2>\n

        Interestingly, medicine also uses a treatment known as sterile maggot therapy<\/strong>. In carefully selected cases, specially bred sterile larvae are intentionally placed in chronic wounds to remove dead tissue and promote healing.<\/p>\n

        The difference is significant.<\/p>\n

        Medical larvae are sterile, carefully controlled, and applied only under professional supervision. Accidental infestation by wild fly larvae, on the other hand, is a medical condition that requires prompt treatment.<\/p>\n

        How Can It Be Prevented?<\/h2>\n

        The risk can be greatly reduced by:<\/p>\n

        • Cleaning every wound as soon as possible.<\/li>\n
        • Changing dressings regularly.<\/li>\n
