He glanced toward the door…<\/p>\n
Then back at me.<\/p>\n
The knocking came again.<\/p>\n
This time louder.<\/p>\n
“I’ll get it,” he said quickly.<\/p>\n
But I had already started walking.<\/p>\n
He gently stepped in front of me.<\/p>\n
“Please…”<\/p>\n
“Let me.”<\/p>\n
His reaction only made my heart race faster.<\/p>\n
From the hallway, I heard voices.<\/p>\n
A woman.<\/p>\n
Calm.<\/p>\n
Professional.<\/p>\n
Then Daniel called softly,<\/p>\n
“Emily…”<\/p>\n
“Could you come here?”<\/p>\n
Standing in the doorway…<\/p>\n
Was my surgeon.<\/p>\n
Beside her stood a nurse.<\/p>\n
The surgeon smiled kindly.<\/p>\n
“I’m sorry for stopping by unexpectedly.”<\/p>\n
“I wanted to check on you personally.”<\/p>\n
I looked between her and Daniel.<\/p>\n
“What is going on?”<\/p>\n
She took a slow breath.<\/p>\n
“During your procedure…”<\/p>\n
“…you had an unexpected allergic reaction.”<\/p>\n
My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n
“We treated it immediately.”<\/p>\n
“You’re completely safe.”<\/p>\n
“But the reaction caused much more swelling than we normally see.”<\/p>\n
She gently touched my shoulder.<\/p>\n
“If you saw yourself right now…”<\/p>\n
“…you’d almost certainly believe something had gone terribly wrong.”<\/p>\n
“It hasn’t.”<\/p>\n
Daniel lowered his eyes.<\/p>\n
“I remembered how many years you spent hating your reflection.”<\/p>\n
“I was afraid one look today…”<\/p>\n
“…would erase all the confidence you’d fought so hard to build.”<\/p>\n
Tears filled my eyes.<\/p>\n
“So…”<\/p>\n
“You removed every mirror?”<\/p>\n
He nodded.<\/p>\n
“I wanted the first face you saw after healing…”<\/p>\n
“…to be the one you actually chose.”<\/p>\n
Not the temporary swelling.<\/p>\n
Not the bruises.<\/p>\n
Not the fear.<\/p>\n
The surgeon smiled.<\/p>\n
“He called me three times this morning asking if he was doing the right thing.”<\/p>\n
I looked at Daniel.<\/p>\n
“You really did all this…”<\/p>\n
“…because you were trying to protect me?”<\/p>\n
He laughed nervously.<\/p>\n
“I figured you’d be furious.”<\/p>\n
“I was.”<\/p>\n
I admitted with a smile.<\/p>\n
“For about five minutes.”<\/p>\n
Three weeks later…<\/p>\n
The bandages came off.<\/p>\n
Most of the swelling had disappeared.<\/p>\n
The surgeon placed a small mirror into my hands.<\/p>\n
Daniel stood beside me.<\/p>\n
Holding my hand so tightly I could feel it shaking.<\/p>\n
“I don’t care what you see,” he whispered.<\/p>\n
“I just hope you finally see what I’ve seen from the day we met.”<\/p>\n
Slowly…<\/p>\n
I looked.<\/p>\n
For a long moment…<\/p>\n
I didn’t say a word.<\/p>\n
The woman staring back at me looked different.<\/p>\n
Not because of her nose.<\/p>\n

She wasn’t searching for flaws.<\/p>\n
She was simply smiling.<\/p>\n
