“The one everyone agreed to.”<\/p>\n
I handed her the page.<\/p>\n
Each family’s name appeared beside the food they’d promised to bring.<\/p>\n
Next to her family’s section was written:<\/p>\n
Every item had a large blank space beside it.<\/p>\n
“I don’t understand,” she said.<\/p>\n
“I know.”<\/p>\n
I looked around the table.<\/p>\n
“Because none of it is here.”<\/p>\n
Her husband shrugged.<\/p>\n
“We figured you had enough.”<\/p>\n
“I did.”<\/p>\n
“But not for guests who contribute nothing.”<\/p>\n
Silence.<\/p>\n
I walked over to the grill.<\/p>\n
Lifted every tray of cooked meat.<\/p>\n
Then carried them inside.<\/p>\n
My sister quietly followed me with the salads.<\/p>\n
My husband stared in disbelief.<\/p>\n
“What are you doing?”<\/p>\n
“Serving lunch.”<\/p>\n
“Inside.”<\/p>\n
“For the people who actually prepared it.”<\/p>\n
Svetlana laughed nervously.<\/p>\n
“Very funny.”<\/p>\n
“I’m serious.”<\/p>\n
I closed the patio door.<\/p>\n
The relatives remained outside.<\/p>\n
Staring through the glass.<\/p>\n
Her oldest son knocked.<\/p>\n
“Aunt Lisa…”<\/p>\n
“Are we eating?”<\/p>\n
“Of course.”<\/p>\n
I opened the door just enough to hand each teenager a hamburger bun and a bottle of water.<\/p>\n
“The adults can decide what happens next.”<\/p>\n
The boys looked embarrassed.<\/p>\n

“You humiliated yourselves.”<\/p>\n
“You promised to help.”<\/p>\n
“You brought nothing.”<\/p>\n
“You criticized everything.”<\/p>\n
“And somehow expected gratitude.”<\/p>\n
She looked at my husband.<\/p>\n
“Are you seriously letting her do this?”<\/p>\n
For the first time all afternoon…<\/p>\n
He didn’t answer immediately.<\/p>\n

He looked at the empty grocery bags they’d never brought.<\/p>\n
