The attorney stepped forward and placed another folder on the hospital table.<\/p>\n
“This morning,” he said calmly, “Sanders Global completed the acquisition of twenty-eight percent of your company’s voting shares.”<\/p>\n
My father’s face lost all color.<\/p>\n
“That’s impossible.”<\/p>\n
“It was finalized at 8:17 this morning.”<\/p>\n
The attorney slid the purchase agreement across the table.<\/p>\n
My father grabbed it with trembling hands.<\/p>\n
Every signature was real.<\/p>\n
Every document was valid.<\/p>\n
Alistair spoke quietly.<\/p>\n
“I had no intention of becoming involved in your business.”<\/p>\n
“But then I learned why my wife had hidden her pregnancy.”<\/p>\n

“Inside this envelope is a proposal.”<\/p>\n
My father looked hopeful.<\/p>\n
“A way out?”<\/p>\n
“Perhaps.”<\/p>\n
“You have two choices.”<\/p>\n
“First…”<\/p>\n
“You publicly acknowledge your daughter and grandson.”<\/p>\n
“You return her full position within the company.”<\/p>\n
“You apologize.”<\/p>\n
“And you begin treating her with the respect she’s deserved all along.”<\/p>\n
“And the second option?” my father asked quietly.<\/p>\n
Alistair didn’t hesitate.<\/p>\n
“I call for an extraordinary shareholders’ meeting on Monday morning.”<\/p>\n
The attorney finished the sentence for him.<\/p>\n
“With our voting bloc, we are fully prepared to replace the current executive leadership.”<\/p>\n
My mother’s knees nearly gave way.<\/p>\n
“You’d destroy us?”<\/p>\n
Alistair shook his head.<\/p>\n
“No.”<\/p>\n
“You’ve mistaken accountability for destruction.”<\/p>\n
He walked back to my bedside.<\/p>\n
Picked up Kirk with extraordinary gentleness.<\/p>\n
Our son yawned and wrapped his tiny hand around Alistair’s finger.<\/p>\n
