“You’ve had years to humiliate my daughter.”<\/p>\n
“Now it’s your turn to feel uncomfortable.”<\/p>\n
Everyone watched silently.<\/p>\n
“When Lucas told his mother he wanted to marry that young woman…”<\/p>\n
“…Brenda secretly invited the girl to lunch.”<\/p>\n
My mother’s smile disappeared.<\/p>\n
“And she spent two hours telling her she wasn’t pretty enough.”<\/p>\n
“Wasn’t thin enough.”<\/p>\n

The woman ended the relationship the following week.<\/p>\n

A collective gasp spread across the backyard.<\/p>\n
Lucas looked physically ill.<\/p>\n

Brenda began crying.<\/p>\n
“I only wanted the best for you.”<\/p>\n
“You wanted control,” Lucas replied quietly.<\/p>\n
My mother stepped beside me and gently placed one hand on my shoulder.<\/p>\n

Brenda quietly picked up her purse.<\/p>\n

She walked toward the front gate.<\/p>\n
Halfway there…<\/p>\n
She stopped.<\/p>\n
Turned back toward me.<\/p>\n
“I’m sorry.”<\/p>\n

I believed she meant it.<\/p>\n
Months later, after our daughter was born, Brenda asked if she could visit.<\/p>\n

Lucas looked at me.<\/p>\n
“The decision is yours.”<\/p>\n
